St. Sophia Weekly Update

Church Services

We have reached the middle of the Great Fast. We pray the Holy Cross, which we celebrate tomorrow, brings you hope, joy, and continued strength through the rest of our Lenten journey. Please join us this evening for Great Vespers beginning at 6PM and tomorrow's services commemorating the Sunday of Holy Cross, beginning with Orthros at 9AM followed by Divine Liturgy at 10AM.

Also, as the first sunday of the month, there will be a Sunday School Sermon this Sunday. We invite all Sunday School aged children to join Fr. Thomas on the solea.

Lenten services this week include Great Compline on Monday at 7PM followed by the 9th Hour/Presanctified Liturgy on Wednesday at 6:30PM, and the Third Stasis Salutation Service on Friday at 7PM.

Please visit the church website to get caught up on all of the scheduled Lenten services and be sure to catch the announcement below on Sunday of Orthodoxy.

Sunday Bulletin
Print Version
The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."

Prayer for Healing
You, Who are the Physician of our souls and bodies, grant recovery to the sick, raising them hastily from the bed of suffering so that they may glorify You, our Merciful Saviour, and protect the healthy ones from any disease. Bless, O Lord, strengthen and protect with Your grace all those who with philanthropy and sacrifice take care of the sick at their homes or in hospitals. Remove all disease and suffering from among the people and teach us to value life and health as Your gifts. Give us, o God, Your peace and fill our hearts with steadfast faith in Your protection, with hope in Your support and with love for You and our neighbour. For it is Yours to have mercy on us and save us, our God, and to You we give glory: to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Message from Archbishop Elpidophoros

Grateful to the brilliant scientists and health care workers who, through hard work and by the Grace of God, produce and deliver life-saving vaccines. We have a moral obligation to make vaccines available to everyone in the world.

Wisdom of the Fathers

And see how He also makes His discourse unexceptionable: not saying at all, "whether you will, or no, you must suffer this," but how? "If any man will come after me."
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 55 on Matthew 16, 1. B#54, p.339., 4th Century

"I force not, I compel not, but each one I make lord of his own choice; wherefore also I say, 'If any man will.' For to good things do I call you, not to things evil, or burdensome; not to punishment and vengeance, that I should have to compel.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 55 on Matthew 16, 1. B#54, p.339., 4th Century
