Executive Update

Good morning and happy Sunday! I hope you all have had a great week back from Spring Break, and that you all are staying safe and healthy. We only have 5 weeks left of the 2021 Spring Semester. Congratulations on making it this far!

For ASUM that means that we are moving into one of the busiest times of the year, elections season! If you are interested in student issues, advocacy work, the legislative process, or civic engagement, ASUM may be the perfect place for you!
Chapter Executive Positions

Applying for executive positions a great way to get involved in ASUM! We need all kinds of students to help our organization thrive. Each Chapter will be seeking students to fill President, Vice-President, Finance Director, Programming Director, Recruitment Director, and Public Relations Director roles. May of these positions are paid, and all of them offer an opportunity to learn new leadership skills.

All 4 of our campus chapters will be releasing officer applications soon. You do not have to be an existing ASUM member to apply. We are looking for students that are interested in serving the UM System student body authentically and diligently. If you are interested in applying but don't know where to start, send an email to asum@umsystem.edu and we will get you set up for success!

Legislative Director Positions

In addition to campus positions, Legislative Director applications are now open. ASUM hires 2 Legislative Directors who are in charge of planning and facilitating the ASUM Legislative Internship Program. The position allows for hands-on legislative experience and is great for students interested in a future in advocacy or policy work. Both Legislative Directors are paid a $9,000 stipend for the work they do.

You do not have to have the legislative experience to apply. We are looking for students that are self-motivated, innovative, and willing to learn! Applications are due this Friday, April 16th at 5 PM. If you are interested in applying send an email to ccs594@mail.missouri.edu!

Legislative Update

Our Legislative Team has been working on a variety of advocacy and research-related issues to best serve the students of the University of Missouri System this Semester. Here are some brief updates on their work and some happenings at the Capitol:

The legislature is hard at work to pass the FY2022 budget and is continuing to hear policies in committees and on the house and senate floors. ASUM's legislative and intern teams are gearing up for the 2021 Student Advocacy Week, which begins on Monday, April 12th. Students from all four campuses will have the opportunity to virtually meet with state legislators throughout the week.

Updates on the legislation we are supporting can be found here.

Our interns have transitioned from research into policy writing. After spending the first half of the semester writing a policy proposal on an issue important to them and relevant to the UM System, they are learning how to write specific legislation to turn the proposal into action. Student groups around all four campuses may be hearing from our team as we collaborate on how to solve these issues affecting students.

Here are some news articles we had our eye on this week:

More updates on our Legislative Team and happenings in the Capitol will be provided in future newsletters, so stay tuned!

Campus Chapter Mid-Semester Updates

As our teams come back from Spring Break and move into the last portion of the Semester, we are reflecting on what we have accomplished and looking forward to upcoming activities in April and May.

University of Missouri Columbia:

This has been a fun and productive semester for us. ASUM Mizzou was able to establish a mentor-mentee program for all executive members, fill our final executive position - treasurer - after a resignation in the fall, and begin monthly chapter meetings. The Beyond the Vote monthly meetings were fun and engaging because we were able to partner with various student groups and alumni. In January we had a government accountability meeting with Mizzou alum Sheela Lal. For February, we co-hosted an event with the Legion of Black Collegians on the UM System Board of Curators. In March, we brought in Boone County Clerk Brianna Lennon to chat about the importance of local elections. Outside of our Beyond the Vote monthly meetings, you could often find our members tabeling across campus with fun stickers and trinkets. Our tabeling focused on a variety of causes including inauguration day, registering municipal voters, and promoting the sustainability challenge event. We are so thankful for all the support and look to do bigger and better things as we head to the end of this semester and beyond. Mizzou updates are written by Mizzou ASUM Vice-President, Brendan Spicer.

Missouri University of Science and Technology:

Despite COVID-19, this semester has been a busy one for Missouri S&T ASUM. At the beginning of the semester, our team spent lots of time on campus tabeling so that Missouri S&T students, faculty, and staff were able to register to vote before local elections. At those tabeling events, we were also able to hand out information for requesting Absentee ballots to individuals who were not able to drive home for the upcoming election. Outside of tabeling, our executive team was able to share the importance of civic engagement with specific student groups on campus like the Sigma Pi Fraternity. These presentations focused on accessible ways for students to get more involved in the government decision-making process. We were also able to share the information more broadly through our weekly General Body meetings where we discuss various legislative and officer updates. There we were also able to revise our bylaws so that we can better serve students in the future. Our executive team had a great time planning and executing some major events on campus this Spring. First, we have had our Interim CFO of Missouri S&T come and speak to us on Missouri S&T's 10-year financial plan. Then, we had our Women in Government Panel during women’s history month where we had Missouri Senator Lauren Arthur and UM System Lobbyist Stephanie Willis speak on the challenges of being a woman working in government. Finally, as a group, we watched “On the Basis of Sex” and discussed how far women have come in working towards equality and Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s life. For the rest of the semester, we plan to continue to have regular general body meetings, bring speakers to campus, and having more internal events as COVID restrictions continue to lift on campus. If you are interested in attending general body meetings please reach out! Missouri S&T updates are written by S&T Vice-President, Chrysalin Martin.

University of Missouri Kansas City

UMKC ASUM was excited to have a full executive team this semester to plan and facilitate fun and engaging events for students. This semester, we focused on learning how to advocate truth to power on behalf of UMKC students. In February, we had a general chapter meeting to explain the ASUM legislative platform for the 2021 legislative session. In March, we were happy to bring in Overland Park City Councilman, Dr. Farassati to chat with students about his experiences being a public servant. Finally, last week we brought in ASUM Executive Director, Claire Shipp and Legislative Director, Brandon Fenton, for a Q&A session about their experiences in ASUM. Outside of those events, we have worked on getting UMKC students engaged in our annual student advocacy week that is being held virtually this year. Looking to the end of this semester, we are working on developing Executive Team applications and a transition plan. We are looking forward to seeing where new leadership takes our organization! UMKC updates are written by UMKC ASUM Chapter Vice-President, Sagi Rudnick.

University of Missouri St. Louis

This semester UMSL ASUM has been focused on building general membership and engaging students in the local elections process. In January, we were able to co-host a virtual mayoral debate forum with the UMSL Student Government Association to educate voters on the candidates who are running for the upcoming municipal elections. This event helped the UMSL student body develop a better understanding of the St. Louis mayoral candidates' platforms and it reinforced the importance of voting in local elections. Since then, UMSL ASUM has been working on reforming our elections process so that our leadership truly reflects the interests and needs of all UMSL ASUM Students. If you are interested in getting involved with UMSL ASUM, applying for an officer position is a great place to start! Our officer applications will be released soon, so stay tuned! UMSL updates are written by UMSL ASUM Chapter Vice-President, Emma Cogdill.
