Refer Madness: Weed Myths

Discovering the truth about weed

We've heard it all over the years in regards to the myths people still believe about weed and people that use it. The main theme with these statements is that they are generalizing a very diverse product. The truth is that the effect that weed can have on a person is totally unique to them. We've come so far with the legalization and stigmatization of cannabis, but we still have a long way to go.

One of the best ways that you can be an advocate for cannabis is to learn the facts. We've gathered some weed myths and debunked them. Check it out!

Myth #1: Smoking weed makes you a pothead.

Because the term 'pothead' is often associated with laziness and a constant state of head high, many folks don't want to be labeled as such. People that enjoy weed are extremely diverse and use cannabis for many different reasons. There are strains that increase productivity and helpful products such as topicals that don't lead to a high at all.

Whether it is to get high and relax or help with chronic pain symptoms, it shouldn't matter. What matters is that you are choosing to take care of yourself! Toke with pride.

Myth #2: Smoking weed is more damaging for your lungs than smoking cigarettes.

There's no getting around the fact smoke is harmful to our lungs. But, there are significant differences between the impacts that smoking cigarettes have vs. smoking weed. A couple things come in to play here when we compare the effects.

First is quantity. "The more you use, the more you lose." According to the CDC, the average cigarette smoker is lighting up about 14 cigarettes each day. Which is much less than the average marijuana user, clocking in at 2-3 times per month.

Another factor is the product itself. Cigarettes are made up of tobacco and chemical additives. Smoking marijuana is exactly that, just marijuana.

Myth #3: Marijuana kills brain cells.

You've probably heard this one at some point in your life. The next time you hear it, you can tell them that the science says no! If they don't trust the science...you're on your own. According to a study done by the Journal of Neuroscience, weed does not kill brain cells.
