Dear Friends of Cooler Communities,

Spring has sprung and, if you’re like us, you’ve been reveling in the longer days, sunshine and first signs of early flowers. While we continue to protect ourselves and others from COVID19, the growing number of vaccinations allows us to see relief on the horizon.

Spring also means that several Cooler Communities events are rapidly approaching!  From Sherborn in the eastern part of the state to the Pioneer Valley in Western Massachusetts, virtual events are inspiring actions by individuals and households to reduce their carbon footprints.

For instance, in April over a thousand high school students along with their friends and families will be participating in Cooler Springfield and Sustainathon programs which will include actions designed by students. You can participate here. Likewise, the Agawam Public Schools are hosting their second Cooler Communities Challenge Agawam for K-12 students and the whole community. The Challenge will culminate in a virtual Fair on April 28 to be kicked off by Mayor Sapelli. The schedule of public events and proposed Actions to be taken by community members will be posted here soon.

Events are also in various stages of planning and development in Sherborn, Hadley and Greenfield.  Keep an eye out for updates later in the spring.

And plans for the 21/22 school year are well underway. Several school districts and town commissions have expressed interest and if you would like to participate, now is a good time to reach out!

Wishing you health and a happy and meaningful Earth Day on April 22nd!

 The Cooler Communities Team

P.S.  Speaking of Earth Day, the Springfield Museums will be hosting a virtual Earth Day Festival on April 18. Check out the videos, at-home activities, and more to learn how to promote conservation through everyday actions and become better environmental stewards.

Congratulations to Tammy Rumplik, the K-4 STEAM specialist for the Agawam Public Schools, for receiving the Conservation Teacher of the Year award from the Mass Audubon Society!  Tammy received the award in part because of her boundless enthusiasm and energy in organizing the Agawam Cooler Communities Challenge. In addition to working with students, Tammy recruited teachers throughout the district and coordinated with administrators and community volunteers.  Here is a short video of Tammy describing the benefits of a Cooler Communities Challenge.

We have updated our free Curriculum Guide to provide lessons and ideas for educators interested in incorporating climate solutions into their curriculum, at any grade level and in any subject. The latest version is now available. Please have a look, and reach out if you implemented any of the ideas or have questions or comments: maryjaneeustace@ener-g-save.com.

In February, we received an e-mail from Savannah Byrne and Chunwen Ko from Northfield High School. The two seniors had started a business that assists clients in discovering their next steps towards a healthier and more energy efficient lifestyle. We were thrilled to hear about their work and are including a link to their personalized action questionnaire here so you can find out what might be possible for you to do!
