Dear Friends:
Our founder, Dr. Ron O’Connor, formed Management Sciences for Health in 1971 to support countries in strengthening their health systems, especially the local ownership needed to achieve sustainable change. In 2021, we are celebrating our five decades of health impact by focusing on the future of global health – the Next 50 Years.
Our anniversary comes when the COVID-19 pandemic is emphasizing the importance of global health work to every one of us. MSH staff have been on the frontlines, along with our partners all over the world, helping more than 20 countries with emergency response. I invite you to read our 2020 Annual Report to hear what the pandemic looked like from their eyes.
As we look to the Next 50 Years, we begin by participating in the biggest, fastest, and what we will endeavor to ensure is the most successful vaccine roll out in history. In 2030 we will re-examine the Sustainable Development Goals. For MSH, Goal 3.8, focused on achieving universal health coverage, is particularly pertinent; this is a movement that MSH has been involved in since the Alma Ata Declaration in 1978.
Looking further into the future, we will continue to work to ensure that quality, safe medicines are available to everyone who needs them; that countries combat infectious diseases and the growing challenges of noncommunicable diseases; that the countries we work in are well advised on managing and financing their health systems; that frontline health workers are trained and protected; and that we continue an approach to our work that champions diversity, equity, and inclusion. We will strive to prevent future pandemics, and to make the world better prepared for when they come.
To mark our anniversary, later this year we will be rolling out a new website, and we hope you will join us for some virtual events that will focus on fast-forwarding sustainable change in global health.
