Abstract:

This presentation explains Building Performance Simulation (BPS) and its role in reducing buildings’ carbon footprint. It explains six steps towards an integrative design process, where BPS is used to create an energy-efficient and healthy building:

1) Engage early,

2) Evaluate and compare,

3) Evolve Energy Efficiency Measures (EEMs),

4) Ensure comfort,

5) Extend detailed simulation,

6) Establish M&V.

Building performance analysis tools, their pros and cons are described in this presentation. This presentation explains data by storytelling, demonstrating case studies of high-performance buildings with stringent energy reduction goals. Case studies cover early-stage design analysis, such as passive design strategies, façade optimization, and parametric analysis as well as detailed design energy analysis.

Learning objectives

  • Describe Building Performance Simulation and its role in reducing buildings carbon footprint.
  • Identify 6 steps toward a BPS- integrated design process.
  • Understand the role of BPS at each design phase.
  • Describe Energy Use Intensity (EUI) and identify tools to predict EUI of a building based on building type and climate type.
  • Identify tools for Building Performance Analysis, their pros, and cons.

Presenter:

Ladan Ghobad, Ph.D, LEED AP BD+C

Ladan is a building scientist and energy analyst; her practice focuses on energy performance analysis in new construction and existing building renovations, daylighting analysis, and thermal comfort studies.

She is an expert in energy modeling and daylighting simulation using variety of software programs. She has built her expertise working in the professional field for eight years after she had graduated from NC State University with a Ph.D. degree in Sustainable Design. Ladan has worked on over 35 projects, including Zero Net Energy (ZNE) and LEED projects, Title T-24 compliance projects, and large-scale sustainable master-planning projects. In addition, she has published several papers about architectural design optimization, comparison of simulation software programs, daylighting simulation, and case studies of the actual projects that she had worked on.
