The sheriff's office wants to spend millions more on staff and infrastructure

At yesterday's county commission meeting, Chief Deputy Ralph Spidalieri put forward a request to hire six additional deputies and 12 corrections officers at the county jail.

He said that bringing the jail up to federal standards and housing federal prisoners "could offset a huge portion of our operation."

  • Commissioners also approved wage increases for county personnel and a $165,000 office renovation for Acting Finance Director David Lair, who comes to the commission from the sheriff's office.

Here's the full story. Also, you can watch the livestream on our Facebook page; this is the part where Spidalieri talks

Rootstown trustees remember John 'Flash' Gordon

At Tuesday's meeting, trustees shared memories of Rootstown High School teacher and firefighter John Gordon, who died March 16.

  • Trustee Dave McIntyre was a student of Gordon's when the teacher also served with the volunteer fire department. "When the pager would go off he'd go running out of the building," McIntyre said. "That's where the nickname Flash Gordon came from."

Wendy DiAlesandro covered the trustees meeting. You can read John Gordon's obituary here.

Vaccines

Portage County is moving to a new vaccine registration system

The Portage County Health District announced in a press release that the process for vaccine registration will be shifting over to the Ohio Department of Health Vaccination Management System, per state requirements.

This means that anyone registering for the first time to schedule a vaccine appointment should go to gettheshot.coronavirus.ohio.gov to do so.

If you have already registered in the Portage County system:

  • You will receive a phone call from the Ohio Department of Health to schedule your appointment at the Kent State University Field House. Keep an eye out; the calls may come from a 614 number or an 866 number.

  • The call will say that you are on a wait list for the Covid vaccine and give instructions to call an 866 number to book a vaccination appointment at the March 30 vaccination clinic.

  • You must call the number back in order to schedule an appointment.
