MBYC Advanced Race Team Newsletter

As our Junior Program continues to thrive and expand, we're adding this Newsletter highlighting our Advanced Race Team with news and information specifically geared towards and about our more advanced, experienced sailors. We hope this also inspires our younger sailors with a glimpse of what the future holds for their own sailing adventures as a member of Team MBYC!!!
Helly Hansen NOOD Regatta, San Diego - 29ers

In a new adventure, Shane and Allie have been training for the past month in 29ers and sailed their first big event at the Helly Hansen NOOD Regatta, San Diego, March 20-21. Up against many teams with a lot more experience, Shane and Allie sailed strong with most finishes around mid-fleet. Great job team! 29ers take an extra bit of athleticism and stamina and are one of the doublehanded boats sailed in the US Youth Championships.
Spring C420 Ocean Regatta at SDYC

Our C420 Race Team is headed to SDYC this weekend for the Spring C420 Ocean RegattaThis is a great learning opportunity for our young teams as competition includes a Junior National Champion and some of the strongest teams around the country. 20+ boats are expected with well more than half the entries in the 16+ year old category. 5 of our 6 MBYC teams are in the U16 category, with only 3 other U16 teams registered. We see such awesome potential in these next few years as our teams continue to learn and grow!
Oakley training with her i420 partner in Newport Beach.

i420 Annapolis Early Bird Regatta

Meanwhile, one of our other superstars, Oakley, is headed all the way over to Maryland for the i420 Annapolis Early Bird Regatta. Oakley discovered sailing just over four years ago and has shown remarkable growth and fierce determination in making her mark in the youth sailing world. We wish her and her skipper the best of luck this weekend and we are so proud to have Oakley representing Team MBYC on this new adventure!

What's the difference between an i420 and a C420 you ask?
The i420 is a lighter, more tunable boat, with a tapered mast, adjustable spreaders, high performance foils etc. The i420 is an international class with competition in 43 countries around the globe. It's also one of the doublehanded boats used in US Youth Champs and Youth Sailing World Championships for boys and girls.
The C420 is made for more widespread club use around the US. It's sturdier and heavier than the i420 and has fixed spreaders and a non-tapered mast. C420s work well for club use as they are easy to maintain for Junior Programs making personal boat ownership unnecessary. Sailors looking into more serious campaigns can purchase their own personal rigging and sail upgrades making for a more affordable and accessible racing experience for many kids.
