Scottish Imaging Network: A Platform for Scientific Excellence

SINAPSE Vacancy

As announced in last month's newsletter, we are now recruiting for the key role of SINAPSE Operations Manager to lead delivery of project outcomes for our Scotland-wide research network. Applications are still being accepted, up to the closing date of 7 April. More details...

SINAPSE Virtual Happy Hour

Social distancing measures over the past year have not only impeded imaging research progress but also severely limited opportunities for contact with coworkers and collaborators and for making new connections. To help make up for the lack of social contact with fellow imaging researchers under remote working, we are pleased to introduce a monthly SINAPSE Virtual Happy Hour for socialising and informal networking. The inaugural event will take place (online) at 4:30pm on Friday 16 April and all SINAPSE members - from students to professors - are warmly welcomed to attend. More details (including directions to receive the event information)...

More activities from Research Innovation Scotland

The Research Innovation Scotland webpage – jointly developed by the Scottish research pools with our SFC-funded partners, the Innovation Centres and Interface – continues to be updated with new funding opportunities, case studies, and information on upcoming co-organised activities.

The Coffee Break @ RIS

The invitation remains open to all SINAPSE members for participation in short, informal online conversations with researchers in other disciplines from across Research Innovation Scotland. Fill out a very short application form and then the RIS team will coordinate the matching of participants from across disciplines and scheduling of meeting time and online meeting room. More details...

RIS-KTN Workshop Series

SINAPSE is delighted to co-lead, along with the Life Sciences research pool SULSA, the first workshop in a series being organised by Research Innovation Scotland in collaboration with KTN. On the topic of Health and Wellbeing, this workshop aims to identify where the immediate and long-term challenges exist for our Health Service and how collaborative research and innovation (from medical imaging, life sciences, and other health technology areas) can help overcome them.

This initial Health & Wellbeing workshop is a closed event with a cross-sectoral audience, to serve as a scoping exercise, but will be followed by further activities with opportunities for more open engagement. More information and a link to register interest in participation will be posted to the Research Innovation Scotland webpage next week!

Edinburgh Imaging news round-up

March news headlines from Edinburgh Imaging include funding awarded for a public engagement project on brain image databanks, publication of findings that post-stroke cognition is influenced by the location of white matter hyperintensities on MRI in patients with lacunar stroke, and a PREVENT Dementia study milestone in the recruitment of its 700th and final baseline participant. Image of the Month: FeMRI for iliac vessel imaging

Our April Image of the Month, courtesy of Dr Sokratis Stoumpos, shows coronal views of the iliac vessels (and surrounding abdominal and pelvic anatomy) in patients with chronic kidney disease imaged with three techniques: A. CT angiography (CTA) with iodine contrast, B. StarVIBE free-breathing 3D T1-weighted MRI, C. ferumoxytol-enhanced MRI (feMRI). Both CTA and StarVIBE show excellent delineation of areas of arterial calcification, which correspond to intraluminal filling defects in abdominal aorta in feMRI. Furthermore, arterial and venous walls and luminal characteristics are well-defined in feMRI with the technique having an advantage of obtaining both arteriography and venography with a single test. Importantly, ferumoxytol can be safely used as a contrast agent in patients with renal failure for whom CT angiography with iodinated contrast material (or conventional gadolinium-enhanced MRA) carry potential risks of nephrotoxicity.

Celebrating diversity in imaging research

This month we did not have any volunteers to be profiled in our newsletter feature raising visibility of SINAPSE members belonging to marginalised groups. Among other initiatives toward improving inclusion and diversity in Scotland's STEM research environments, we recently launched this feature to platform individuals who presently may be less likely to come to mind as a “typical” imaging researcher because of characteristics including disability, race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, gender identity, socio-economic background, and country of origin. Our goal is for all individuals to see their identities represented and welcomed in the SINAPSE membership.

Our call for volunteers to be profiled has received wide social media support, including retweets by SINAPSE members and allied projects such as VisNET, STEM Equals, and The STEM Village. However, the success of this initiative relies upon willing volunteers – and we appreciate this touches on issues that are inherently personal and that not everyone is comfortable addressing publicly. We sincerely thank those who agreed to be our first profiled SINAPSE members, and we encourage others across our membership to consider volunteering or encouraging colleagues to volunteer in order for this feature to continue.
