Welcome to the March 2021 newsletter

As we pass the Equinox into Spring our projects are leaping into life with events and workshops. We have a first cooking workshop online and first for 2021 seed and plant swap at the Garden. Read on on for lots of news to get your teeth into over the Easter break.

We would like to give big thank you to Emma Goodfellow, who has been helping Kaska on sessional basis with project admin and digital storytelling, including this newsletter. It was a real pleasure to have you on the team - we would not have achieved nearly as much without your support over the last 3 months! Emma will generously continue to volunteer her time to write about her young family's exploits growing food and exploring nature for the PLANT blog.

We hope you enjoy this issue and remember further details about all the events are on our website and our Facebook page, or Instagram.

Spring moving fast at the Garden

It feels like Spring has truly sprung but March can be unpredictable weather wise so despite the lovely sunshine recently we’re resisting the urge to bash on with outdoor sowing and planting. The propagation of other crops continues to go well with more of the grown-at-home crops now being raised in polytunnel. Outdoor work to get the garden ready for the coming season carries on.

Find out more about what our team has been up to in their latest blog talking about seedlings, volcanic rock dust and much more.

Garden volunteers update

Our Community Education student Heather is coming to the end of her placement, she has been very creative with her ideas and focused on 3 area including our Alzheimer's group, the new Community Fridge and the set up of a new ‘tea and chat’ session. We want to say a huge thank you for all her hard work at PLANT and the Larick centre!

Our garden volunteers continue to support us and some have been busy with garden activities at home to keep the garden growing.  With the hope of restrictions to be reduced soon and our garden to start slowly opening up we are working on putting together a volunteer rota like we did last year. This is so we can ensure we adhere to the numbers of people allowed at any one time at the garden and also enable as many of our volunteers to return safely and enjoy the garden again.  We are planning to have 2-3 slots per day, with allocated plots and tasks to do.  These will be updated with new tasks as and when required with clear instructions on what to do from our expert gardeners Peter and Kirsty.  Keep checking our website and Facebook page for more details.

If you are interested in being part of the rota system please email Ali - volunteer@tayportgarden.org and you will be included on the list.  We are hoping to start up the rota sometime in April.

CAF events are detailed above.

March podcast: Music for the planet

You must have heard by now that COP26, the UN Climate Change Conference, is coming to Glasgow in November. And decisions taken by world leaders at this meeting will determine the future of our planet as they plan their next steps in tackling climate change at a global level. It's no surprise that many people in Scotland are very excited about it and many projects have sprung up to celebrate it and raise awareness of climate emergency and action ahead of the event.

In the March podcast episode we hear from a local young musician, Jo Stark, about one such project - 100 Days of Green Nevis Challenge. She’s interviewed by a dynamic duo: our regular field reporter Kathleen is joined by Heather, who is a Community Education Student from Dundee University on placement with PLANT just now.

You can listen to it on Anchor or wherever you get your podcasts - simply search for 'PLANT Voices Tayport Community Garden'. You can also catch up on our February episode - Tales of Love from Tentsmuir.

Signs of growth at Fruit Tree Walk

The trees are about to burst into bloom on the Fruit Tree Walk and PLANT orchard keepers have sprung into action again. Janice has a lovely update on what’s been going on - including exciting new arrivals - which you can read about here.

They would welcome anyone who would like to help in any way, and have even ordered a new set of pruning tools for you to use. All socially distanced at the moment of course, but hopefully that will change soon. Just get in touch though Ali on volunteer@tayportgarden.org.
