The saying goes, "April showers bring May flowers" and April is showered with career services events and professional development opportunities for students, faculty and staff!

Students can finish the semester strong by attending an upcoming career fair, LinkedIn Photo Day, or student employee appreciation event. And faculty and staff are invited to attend Career Services Champion training and join the Career Development Network. Read on about all the opportunities that await!

Student Employee Appreciation Week: April 12-16

Please join us in celebrating MU student employees during Student Employee Appreciation Week, April 12th-16th! If you need ideas, consider seeking out the ‘Recognition and Appreciation’ module in the Supervisor Toolkit.

The MU Career Center will host sessions on virtual interviewing, financial debts and loans, and practicing mindfulness in collaboration with the Office for Financial Success and Student Health and Well-Being. We hope you will encourage your student employees to attend these virtual opportunities, and supervisors are welcome to participate in the virtual interviewing and practicing mindfulness sessions. There will be opportunities to win prizes for attending!

Supervisors: Student Employee Recruitment & Hiring

The MU Career Center is offering an information session on Tuesday, April 20th at 2:00 PM via Zoom for anyone in a role of recruiting and hiring student employees. The session will be an opportunity to learn more about the Work Study application  platform, utilizing Handshake, and fair and equitable hiring practices. Presenters include:

The Journalism Student Council and MU Career Center are collaborating on a featured speaker event. Five media professionals will discuss their career paths and answer student questions about their respective industries. Students considering a career in journalism, media or communications should definitely plan to attend - all majors are welcome!

The four UM System campuses (UMKC, Missouri S&T, MU, and UMSL) will host a first-ever, multi-campus virtual hiring fair, with new employers that haven’t traditionally recruited from MU! This event is OPEN TO ALL MAJORS and will be the perfect opportunity for exploring students to learn about career opportunities and internships and graduating seniors to talk to employers about full-time positions.

Jumpstart is an early childhood program that matches college students with preschool children with limited resources in our local community. Students serve as Jumpstart tutors, building children's language, literacy and social emotional skills to help prepare them for kindergarten.

Jumpstart is offered as a work-study job paying $11 per hour, OR course credit, earning 6 credit hours towards graduation. Jumpstart Tutors are also AmeriCorps members, which provides a $1300 award at the end of the school year. Jumpstart requires availability on both Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Service will be remote if necessary for the fall 2021 semester.

Career Services Champions attend a multi-module training to become a member of the MU Career Development Network. Participants receive a certificate, laptop sticker, and access to the CDN Canvas organization with resources and information. Training is comprised of the following modules:

Introduction to Career Development at MU: What you need to know to help students

Module 2: Tuesday, April 13th from 12:00 – 1:00 PM
Helping Students: Tips & tools for answering students’ career-related questions
