Dear Neighbors,

I wanted to reach out as we are nearly at the halfway point of the 2021 Legislative Session. In addition to COVID related issues, my main focus has been on fiscal issues and working to make sure that we pass a budget that is fiscally responsible and does not increase the tax burden on the residents and improves the economic climate in Connecticut. I have been part of a vocal group of Moderate House Democrats who are pushing for a zero-tax increase budget. With a $3 billion rainy day fund, $800 million projected surplus from the current fiscal year and close to $4.5 billion coming from the federal government, now is the time to pay down our unfunded pension liability, be conservative but thoughtful with spending and to cut down on a fiscal cliff in future budgets.
I have also had the honor to serve as the House Chairman of the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs this session and we work closely with the State Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Connecticut Military Department and the State Office of Military Affairs to pass a package of bills that help our veterans and supports the thousands of active duty military personnel stationed in Connecticut. I have been committed since last summer to fixing aspects of the Police Accountably bill that raised questions or were vague. I have spent time talking with local Police Chiefs, Law Enforcement Labor Unions and other stakeholders. The most controversial part of the bill involved the section on “Use of Force.” Through hard work, we passed reforms to that bill that fixed parts of the bill that made Law Enforcement Officers uneasy. This section has been revised with the support of all stakeholders. More information about the modifications to the law can be found here.
