FRIDAY LETTER

It's going to be a beautiful Spring weekend!

Vaccine Update
On Thursday, March 25, the Governor announced that with the supply of vaccines expected to significantly increase in the coming weeks, the state is expanding vaccine eligibility to more Californians.  Starting April 1, individuals aged 50+ will be able to make an appointment.  Beginning April 15 individuals 16+ will be eligible for the vaccine.

These two websites are great resources for everything vaccine-related.  They both contain links to sites where you can make an appointment to receive your vaccine.  Rember to check them often as supplies are received and additional appointments are added.

Now that more people are getting vaccinated, the CDC has the following guidelines on what to do now.

What’s Changed

If you’ve been fully vaccinated:

  • You can gather indoors with fully vaccinated people without wearing a mask.
  • You can gather indoors with unvaccinated people from one other household (for example, visiting with relatives who all live together) without masks, unless any of those people or anyone they live with has an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
  • If you’ve been around someone who has COVID-19, you do not need to stay away from others or get tested unless you have symptoms.
    • However, if you live in a group setting (like a correctional or detention facility or group home) and are around someone who has COVID-19, you should still stay away from others for 14 days and get tested, even if you don’t have symptoms.

What Hasn’t Changed

For now, if you’ve been fully vaccinated:

  • You should still take steps to protect yourself and others in many situations, like wearing a mask, staying at least 6 feet apart from others, and avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces. Take these precautions whenever you are:
  • You should still avoid medium or large-sized gatherings.
  • You should still delay domestic and international travel. If you do travel, you’ll still need to follow CDC requirements and recommendations.
  • You should still watch out for symptoms of COVID-19, especially if you’ve been around someone who is sick. If you have symptoms of COVID-19, you should get tested and stay home and away from others.
  • You will still need to follow the guidance at your workplace.

New Visit Carmel Campaign
Visit Carmel launched a new marketing campaign this week. Its tagline is “It’s Time to Discover Pure Inspiration.”  This integrated campaign uses a combination of video and digital advertising to reach upscale, high-intent audiences in top California markets and select fly markets. The ads link to this exciting new curated landing page that serves up the "Best of Carmel-by-the-Sea" in one, easy-to-scroll webpage. This page uses a combination of video, photo galleries, and inviting content that will inspire them to "Stay Longer & Explore More," providing much-needed hotel and retail revenue. This "Pure Inspiration" theme will be integrated across all our marketing vehicles (beyond digital ads and TV), including consumer e-blasts, owned (social) media posts, and when working on earned (traditional media) placements.

This Week in Public Works
New Public Works Demonstration Rain Garden
Forestry staff finished creating the demonstration rain garden in front of the Public Works Department building (east side of Junipero between Fourth and Fifth Avenues). The new landscape looks great, is drought tolerant, and will help infiltrate drainage from the roof of the building into the ground instead of running off in the street. Public Works is awaiting the arrival of a rain barrel to complete the project. The vegetation will grow to cover much of the exposed ground mulch.  Materials and supplies for this project were funded by the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District. Please come and take a look!

ADA Benches
According to Americans with Disabilities Act Guidelines for Accessible Public Rights-of-Way, outdoor bench seats should be a minimum of 17-inches to a maximum of 19-inches above the ground. This new, ADA-compliant teak bench was installed in Picadilly Park this week. A second ADA bench and an ADA-compliant drinking fountain will also be installed at this park soon.

Devendorf Park Renovation
With Public Works guidance and support, our valued partners at Carmel Cares have made significant progress in renovating and refreshing Devendorf Park. One of this week’s highlights was adding decorative granite boulders in the northwest planter near the September 11, 2001, Memorial. According to the Carmel Cares website, “When Carmel’s Forester Sara Davis added some items to our interactive Carmel Cares Project List about Devendorf Park, we got very excited. This is one of our favorite places in Carmel because it is chocked full of interesting history, statues, memorials, incredible tree specimens, and a beautiful grassy area on which to sit and relax. Cindy Vandenberg is the Project Manager for Devendorf Park. In that role, she works with Sara to define needed projects, works with her Volunteers, and recruits more people that want to have the satisfaction of making Devendorf Park more beautiful, safer, and inviting. That’s what we do!"  To be part of the team, please visit Carmelcares.org/help

Beach Upgrade
A significant amount of ice plant was removed by Carmel Cares volunteers along the stone wall at the beach. Below are before and after pictures.

Hand Dryers
Did you know that public restroom hand dryers require maintenance? This week, maintenance was performed, including cleaning air filters, to ensure reliable and long life dryers. Now you know!
