The Week That Was: Catching up on Correspondence

And another episode with EPJ and Friends!

Mon. Mar. 22 - EPJ dialed us up from the West Coast to get the week started, dishing on a variety of topics — and then passing the horn to his pals Highland Park Harry and David Lynch (among others).

Tue. Mar. 23 - The community responded to our episode on Neil Young in the 1980s on Tuesday and we learned about a few favorites (and not-so-favorites).

Wed. Mar. 24 - Wednesday's episode began as a chance for listeners to weigh in on the late, great Eddie Van Halen, but before we knew it, Roy Rogers, Ponderosa and urban foxes were the main topic of discussion. And Bill Mulligan may have been listening while walking a beagle.

Thurs. Mar. 25Thursday was thoughts from Harris King and J.P. Nicolai. Plus, Jesse Jackson. The topics were 1980 debut albums and two films featuring Bruce Springsteen

Fri. Mar. 26 - We wrapped another swell week with listener correspondence on Love (from Vasant Ramamurthy and Mark Neese) and great American bands (Tom Neuerburg nominates Big Head Todd and the Monsters). Thank you to everyone who got in touch. We are catching up on correspondence big time!

INTERN OF THE WEEK: SAMANTHA REED

Sam & Matt & Sami & Mary!

I live in …
Livermore CA.

When not working on Rockin' the Suburbs stuff, I do … a bunch of podcast stuff for a bunch of podcasts! From audio editing to project managing!

My favorite episode is … anything with EPJ!

My record collection consists of … what, like a record record? Just two so far. Unless you count all the records I've slowly and systematically begun stealing from my parents' collection. Shhhh!

The most prized record in my collection is … Angelica Garcia's Cha Cha Palace.

My favorite song is … “Juke Box Hero” by Foreigner.

My favorite song lyric is … "Keep on the sunny side of life!"

I play … a tiny, tiny bit of piano. My dad (who plays guitar like no one I've ever heard!) taught me some chords on the guitar, but unfortunately none of it stuck.

My philosophy of life is … Everything in moderation. Including moderation.

MJ'S BAD BAND NAME OF THE WEEK

BAMBOO FORK

PLAYLIST OF THE WEEK >>>

The Suburbs Pod 1,000! How many songs have you listened to? And what's that about Bob Dylan? And what happened to that one song? The fun — and mystery — never ends with this epic playlist.

What We're Listening To:

Jim: Huey Lewis and the News
Mary:  Best of E-40
Matt:  Gord Downie - The Grand Bounce
Patrick:  Tame Impala - "Breathe Deeper"
Sam: Breakwater - "Release the Beast"
Sami: Betty Who - "I Love You Always Forever"

Friday New Releases: What Are You Buying Next?

The Antlers – Green to Gold (Anti-/Epitaph)
The band describes this as an album of “Sunday morning music.” It’s delicate and moody and ready to relieve you from your next hangover.

Death From Above 1979 – Is 4 Lovers (Spinefarm)
Why did you need Sunday morning music in the first place? Because you listened to this on Saturday night.

Evanescence – The Bitter Truth (BMG)
It’s been a decade since we last heard from this bombastic pop band. Perhaps the timing is spot on. We’ve had more than enough drama over the past few years that we didn’t need it in our music too.

Suzi Quatro – The Devil in Me (Steamhammer/SPV)
The olds in this group will remember Quatro as Happy Days’ Leather Tuscadero. Despite the family sitcom setting, she was actually a bit of a pioneer, in the vein of the Runaways. Forty-plus years later, she still has enough kick to warrant a thumbs-up.

Tune-Yards – Sketchy (4AD)
Next week on the ol’ pod, we feature a countdown of David Bowie songs. If you want to hear Bowie’s continued influence on music, check out this California duo’s fifth album.

Sara Watkins – Under the Pepper Tree (New West)
Cool kids music alert! If you have little ones at home, this Americana album of mostly traditional covers is ideal music for the whole family. Or if you’re a cool kid, listen too.
