PTSA Race & Equity Family Engagement Recap
The PTSA Race & Equity Committee held its first Family Engagement event last week. Over 40 parents, students, faculty, and prospective families attended. The group learned about the Race & Equity activities that have been underway at RHS for nearly a year, including teacher affinity groups and ongoing training on racism and inclusion, upcoming focus groups and school wide surveys to assess the culture and climate, the anti-racism resolution passed by the PTSA, and efforts to make it easier to report incidents. This was the first of a series of monthly gatherings intended to bring the community together to learn about each other, and to broaden our understanding of the complex issues we face in our schools and in our communities. The next event is on April 21st. Everyone is welcome! Registration information will be sent out closer to the date. Email recrhspts@gmail.com or check the website for more info.

Washington State PTA Statement of Solidarity with Asian American Community
Washington State PTA (WSPTA) recognizes and acknowledges that all children are affected by violence against our fellow citizens. Last week's events in Atlanta add to a long history of abuse and inequity in our country. National PTA President Leslie Boggs stated, "National PTA condemns the shootings in Atlanta and other recent violence against Asian Americans. Our association stands firmly against racism in all forms and denounces all racial violence in our country. The acts of hate have a profound effect on the communities impacted, and our nation must do better." Read the full WSPTA Statement here.

Advocacy

Washington State PTA Legislative Report
This week state Democrats will release their budget proposals. The budgets may be influenced by a recent rosy state revenue forecast. In addition to that good news, the American Rescue Plan signed into law by President Biden earlier this month is estimated to bring in $1.85 billion for K-12 education in Washington’s schools. School districts are required to reserve 20% of their share of these funds to address learning loss. The rest may be used to update ventilation systems, reduce class sizes to help with physical distancing requirements, buy PPE, and hire support staff, among other eligible activities. You can find more details about budgets and bills supported by WSPTA in the weekly Legislative Report. Here’s the status on some bills of note:
  • E2SHB 1139, which would require testing and remediation of lead in drinking water, passed out of the Senate education committee without amendment and is now in the Senate Ways & Means Committee.
  • ESHB 1273, which would require schools to supply free menstrual products in bathrooms, passed out of the Senate education committee and is now in the Senate Ways & Means Committee.
  • EHB 1342, which would eliminate lunch copays for students who qualify for reduced-price lunches, passed out of the Senate education committee and is now in the Senate Ways & Means Committee.
  • ESSB 5044, which would require professional development on equity, cultural competency, and dismantling institutional racism, has passed the Senate and is now in the House Education Committee.

Seattle Special Ed PTSA Provides Input on Student Isolation and Restraint
On March 22, the Seattle Special Education PTSA sent comments to SPS on proposed revisions to Policy 3246 regarding Restraint and Isolation. SPS plans to present a revised Policy 3246 to the School Board later this spring. The PTSA asked the District and School Board to commit to banning isolation of students and drastically reducing restraint of students as responses to student behavioral issues. Instead, the PTSA asks that schools adopt and implement positive behavior support programs to help prevent student behaviors that lead adults to believe they have no choice but to isolate or restrain the student.
