2021 Virtual Annual Meeting registration is now open!

2021 VIRTUAL Annual Meeting of the Southwest Conference
Friday, April 23 through Sunday, April 25, 2021

Instead of continuing with two groups...Christ created a fresh start for everybody...bring us together...and that was the end of hostility...peace to outsiders and peace to insiders... treated as and made equals, sharing the same Spirit and having equal access to God. –Ephesians 2:14-18 (The Message)

Co-hosts: Desert Palm UCC (Tempe) and Church of the Good Shepherd (Albuquerque)

Registration is now open! Early registration cost is $100 per church which covers all five delegates, and $20 per person (clergy and guests).

RESOLUTIONS: In accordance with Annual Meeting Standing Rule; resolutions may be submitted to the Conference at Annual Meeting. Resolutions must be in the hands of the Executive Board, in writing, no later than Thursday, April 1, the week before the meeting of the Executive Board preceding the Annual Meeting for approval for submission at the Annual Meeting.

More information and updates will appear on the Annual Meeting page of our website.

One week remains for the $1.5M Southwest Conference Medical Debt Relief Campaign

Here’s how to donate:

  • Write a check to Southwest Conference UCC with “medical debt” in the memo line
  • Donate online here, and designate your contribution as “medical debt” in the comment field.
With over $5300 donated already, that’s almost $530,000 of medical debt that will be wiped out for individuals, veterans, and families in Arizona, New Mexico, El Paso, and the Navajo Nation. Our funds will meet the needs of our neighbors right here in the SWC. Church pledges not yet received aren't reflected in this total.

Be a regular contributor or send in a guest post.  Email Wende with your submission.

Church Jottings

Holly Herman reads your church newsletters and compiles the highlights to keep us up-to-date on the amazing work happening at the Southwest Conference churches. (Thanks, Holly!)

If you’d like a separate article about your news to appear on the website and The Loop, please submit it to Wende by Thursday at noon to have it included in the following Monday’s Loop.

Shadow Rock partnered with The Church of the Palms in the work of Immigration Justice this week.  Shadow Rock used Church of the Palms' van to transport refugees to the Phoenix Welcome Center that had been  stranded by ICE and Border Patrol in Ajo.  Mark Kelly's office routed the request to Shadow Rock who figured out the "how" to make it happen.

Youth on Their Own is a 501(c)(3) charity located in Tucson that serves homeless youth. It is a dropout prevention program that supports the high school graduation and continued success of youth experiencing homelessness.  Their program focuses on financial assistance, basic human needs and guidance. These kids are not in the physical custody of a parent or long-term guardian and are without a stable home. They must meet academic standards to be able to receive a monthly stipend. YOTO also provides resources to find housing and provides a safe place for them to spend time and use a computer.  YOTO also has a mini mall which provides free basic needs such as food, clothing, hygiene, household goods and school supplies.  Casas Adobes members are writing notes of inspiration that will be attached to their monthly stipend checks.

Taos UCC has rented their first church home! They have rented two units, 209E and F Camino de la Merced, and once they are fixed up, and it's safe to meet inside again, they will be a little storefront church smack in the middle of a neighborhood that needs good neighbors.

On Good Friday, a recorded service from First Congregational UCC in Prescott will be available on their website - fccprescott.org. Playwright Micki Shelton (Michele McFadden) has provided a recorded play, In A Corner, to be used with readings and music for the service. (Synopsis: How does a mother deal with the loss of a child? As seemingly fragile Amanda Jones emerges from a courtroom, she is confronted by a cacophony of reporters' voices, but the brash reporter who interviews her ultimately finds himself to be the weaker of the two.)

Members of Encanto Community Church found soup packets in their Easter Baskets.  Why, you ask? Well, they usually join together for Soup Supper on Maundy Thursday, immediately prior to the evening church service. So, even though they cannot be together in-person for Soup Supper this year, they can still join together on Zoom for the event and have been provided with Cup-a- Soup packets. Yes, although Maundy Thursday falls on April Fool’s Day this year, the Soup Supper is not a joke and should offer a wonderful time to be together.

Join the Arizona Faith Network for a book study series led by Dr. Lois Brown, Director of ASU's Center for the Study of Race and Democracy, on racial justice and redlining.  Participants will read the book Minorities in Phoenix, by Bradford Luckingham and discuss the historical and current trends of racism and racial justice throughout Arizona.  Zoom gatherings every other Tuesday from 6:30-8 pm beginning April 6th. Register HERE

The Southwest Conference invites all SWC congregations and individuals to join the $1.5 million Medical Debt Relief campaign running until Easter Sunday. Every $1 raised, will abolish $100 of medical debt. The conference goal is to raise $15,000 to abolish $1.5 million of medical debt.  Please go to SWCUCC.org and donate to have your dollars make a huge difference.

Have a blessed Holy Week, Southwest Conference. Jottings will be back on April 5th.
-Holly

So You Want to Build a Hybrid Worship Experience

If, like so many churches, you are trying to figure out who you'll need to push the buttons, what tech to buy and build, and how to do both in-person and live-on-screen worship at the same time, this is the series for you.

Watch them both during the live premieres, or return to the Indiana-Kentucky Conference YouTube channel at your convenience and get the information and help you need to plan and host a hybrid worship service. It's free!

Desert Garden Gleaners picked nearly 9 tons of citrus!

This year (2021) beginning with the last Thursday of January and continuing for eight weeks, Desert Garden’s Gleaning Ministry Team was able to pick and provide much more citrus for St. Mary’s Food Bank. During this period twenty-one volunteers helped with the gleaning putting in 200 hours of time. Eighty-six trees were gleaned providing 17,720 pounds of citrus for the food bank, who then distributed that citrus to families in need. We are grateful to St. Mary’s for providing all the equipment to be successful in this effort.

Synod eyes resolutions, bylaw changes, from the internal to the global

Delegates to the United Church of Christ’s General Synod this summer will have a wide variety of subjects to consider. Among them:

  • A just peace for Palestine and Israel.

  • Bail bond reform.

  • Safety for women, trans and nonbinary people in settings of ministry.

  • Nature’s rights, and whether they’re on par with human rights.

  • An end to Robert’s Rules of Order as the way Synod meetings must be governed.

Those are just a few of the topics of 11 resolutions and several UCC Bylaws changes that delegates will vote on July 11-18. All are now posted at the event’s website.

Spring 2021 Foundations of Faith Community Nursing

April 8, April 9 and April 10 (Part One)
April 16 and 17 (Part Two)
7:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day via Zoom

Twice a year, Duet trains faith community nurses through our Foundations of Faith Community Nursing Course. The American Nurses Association (ANA) defines Faith Community Nursing (FCN) as “the specialized practice of professional nursing that focuses on the intentional care of the spirit as part of the process of promoting holistic health and preventing or minimizing illness in a faith community.”

UCC PAAM: Hate has no place here!

In light of the shootings in Atlanta and the surge in hate crimes against members of their community, the Pacific Islander & Asian American Ministries (PAAM) of the United Church of Christ has issued this statement.

It's Time to Re-Enter Iran Nuclear Deal

As a Just Peace Church, the United Church of Christ has long advocated for diplomatic and peaceful engagement with Iran, and for the cessation of the “testing, production, and deployment of nuclear weapons.” We have spoken out on multiple occasions in opposition to inflammatory rhetoric and direct provocation that could ultimately lead to war. And the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) adopted a resolution at its 2015 General Assembly in support of the JCPOA.

We must take advantage of the opportunity before us and urge our representatives stand for peace and diplomacy now.

Standing Against Anti-Asian and Pacific Islander Violence

The UCC Mental Health Network Board of Directors adds its voice to those speaking out against the acts of violence and dehumanization targeting the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. Our hearts are broken as we grieve with this community and all who mourn the deaths of those killed March 16.
