2 second Clictivism - ask your MP to support the CEE bill

26th of March marked the date the CEE Bill was due it’s second reading in Parliament, but sadly this was cancelled due to Covid-19 impacting Parliamentary sittings.

Since the Climate and Ecological Emergency (CEE) Bill was tabled in Parliament last September, we’ve seen the Government announce weak climate plans to a backdrop of continuing climate collapse. The Government’s current net-zero by 2050 gives us only a 50/50 chance of not going over a critical rise in global temperature - and this is if the whole world does the same!  Climate change is no longer a prediction, it’s a reality.  Never in our history has there been a more pressing need for radical new legislation. We can use the levers of government power that already exist to protect the future of life on earth.  The CEE bill is already backed by 103 MPs, and we can eventually convert this groundswell into ground-breaking legislative change. This is exactly the logic that led to the Climate Change Act 2008, which started life as a Private Member’s Bill backed by a mass movement of grassroots campaigners.

This is where you come in...
If you believe the  Climate and Ecological Emergency (CEE) Bill should become law, please contact  local MP Simon Jupp and ask him to support the bill.  Exmouth Town Council, EDDC and Devon County Councils are soon to debate whether to support the bill, so please contact all your councillors and encourage them to vote Yes.

Campaigners all over the UK are dropping banners and sending messages to MPs asking them to back the #CEEBill.  Exmouth's banner was made by people from a wide alliance of groups.   It is now available for dropping at a place near you - If you have ideas for a great place to display the  banner , please contact us

Delivery #1 :Thomas taking coldframes to Olley Davey

All Go Go Go for ExeCargo eCargoBike delivery project!

Exmouth Cycles have rented us an ecargo bike for a 3 month trial period at a special Climate Action reduced rate. Thanks to Andy and the Exmouth Cycles team  this project is setting up much faster than if we'd had to add to our Transition Bounce Forward £500 grant.  A starter team of wonderful volunteers (thanks to Tom, Grant, Adrian,Joanna and James)  will be making the deliveries. We are especially pleased to introduce Thomas Wheeler, who is the primary volunteer rider and logistics lead for the bike. Thomas has been a huge help in setting up the service, and he aims to turn it into a full time job at the end of the trial period.  Originally planning on starting up his own delivery business with similar goals to our own project, Thomas has kindly joined ranks with Transition Exmouth, bringing with him, amongst other things, a website designed for a delivery service and importantly, lots of enthusiasm and skill on the bike.   Execargo will become at least one full time job, with volunteers continuing to help out , generating funds for our own ecargobike crowdfunder.
ExeCargo logos and branding designed by Jess Pearson has been funded by Exmouth Town Council as part of their commitment to climate action. .  Copyrite have kindly given us a special price on our flags as their way of supporting the project .  Bike branding will happen next week - keep your eye on our social media for photos !
We have decided to walk before we can run and are starting with a "soft launch" - bringing in businesses gradually so we can test the logistics, bike and services as we go. We are pleased to report that, in just 4 days of operation, we have already saved our first 10,000 grams of CO2! We are currently making deliveries for Mother Earth, Deli on the Strand and Truly Scumptious, who all kindly offered to be guinea pigs for the initial our trial period.   If you're a local business and would like to be involved please contact us
As we roll the service out , local businesses will be offered free deliveries initially, then prices per delivery starting from just £2.  We will also be offering a "Shop and Drop" service for customers - we will do your shopping at local businesses,  then drop your shop to your door.   We are in discussion with Exmouth Propeller about linking Execargo with their Ordaloca website - watch this space !

If you'd like to know more about ecargobikes and the way they are revolutionising deliveries across the UK , there's a brilliant Green Transport Recovery webinar featuring Exeter's Co-Delivery .  We've had some inspiring discussions with them and are looking forward to working with them in future.

So keep your eye out for the bike when out and about in Exmouth, and wave to Thomas and the team as they whizz by!  And remember,  shop local... and if you can't get to the shops - we can ExeCarGO for you!
OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS: FREE STALL at EXMOUTH INDOOR MARKET

Exmouth Indoor Market is due to re-open mid April , and Transition Exmouth have been given the chance to run a community stall free of charge.   We can sell stuff , run workshops or displays , have an exhibition or anything else we can dream up.  We can share the space with other community groups and/or local artists or crafters ... could this be you ?
We can split the space , and have different stalls on different days, create a regular rota or host pop up stalls.   . Lockable storage is available.  We don't have to staff the stall every day, but we do have to make it look interesting and informative.
What a fantastic opportunity !
We are looking for volunteers or small businesses who would like to help us make the most of this town centre opportunity .   Contact us with your ideas
The Transition Exmouth website has been updated , our web address is now www.TransitionExmouth.org . The new site features information and links to our projects and affiliated groups.  They may be a short hiatus as the new address makes its way around the  web , but please do check it out and let us know what you think
Litter-pickin' good ... &  Plastic Free Festival

Plastic Free Exmouth is an active group working with Exmouth Council, businesses, schools, and individuals to gain certification for a Plastic Free Community with Surfers Against Sewage

BRING RAPID CHARGING TO EXMOUTH :
COMPLETE & SHARE THE SURVEY

Rapid Charging Exeter are looking for the next town to have on-street, rapid electric vehicle chargers and Co Cars shared ebikes and ecars.
Vote for Exmouth by completing and sharing this short survey
Survey
👉 https://research.typeform.com/to/J0oFPfTT

Powered by renewables, the chargers can pump in 75 miles of charge in just 30 minutes.

Rapid Charging Exeter hubs comprise of two chargers and two battery units, enabling up to 4 electric cars to charge at the same time. As electric cars become the norm on our streets, having a local rapid charging point will become an important neighbourhood amenity. This network will help our communities become greener with reduced emissions and cleaner air for all.
Video on the Electric City

A partnership with Co Cars car club means that a number of the charger locations will also include a shared electric Co Car. These can be hired by the hour, day or week, making electric cars affordable for everyone.

 LIBRARY OF THINGS FOR EXMOUTH

Work is progressing on the new Exmouth Library of Things and we hope to have access to the venue at Littlemead  Methodist Church by Mid April. We are always on the lookout for volunteers so if you would like to help out in any capacity from decorating, admin or on the day support, please get in touch. If you have any decorating supplies such as paint, especially floor paint, we would be very grateful as the venue could do with a little TLC. The next step on the journey is to start curating items for the Library of Things, so keep your eyes peeled for our new website and Facebook page which are just about to launch. Also we hope to have an article in the Exmouth Journal in the next few week, so if you are having a sort through of garages or sheds have some items that you rarely use and might be suitable for the library of things, then please bear us in mind, we can collect! We would be very grateful for gardening, camping and sports equipment but will consider most things!

Many thanks to Sarah Kersey  for her Green Drinks session in March , about dealing with the way we feel about the climate and ecological crisis.  Sarah is now training to facilitate Climate Cafes and we look forward to the first in person one later this year.

Meanwhile the  Climate Psychology Alliance  offer online  climate cafe sessions

Sarah has kindly sent us us a list of inspiring links :

Not by rehashing the same data and facts we've been discussing for years, says climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe. In this inspiring, pragmatic talk, Hayhoe shows how the key to having a real discussion is to connect over shared values like family, community and religion -- and to prompt people to realize that they already care about a changing climate. "We can't give in to despair," she says. "We have to go out and look for the hope we need to inspire us to act -- and that hope begins with a conversation, today."
