CELEBRATE REGIONAL MOBILITY

The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (Mobility Authority) celebrated the opening of the 183 Toll Road and 290/130 Flyovers Project during the March 31 Board of Directors meeting. Chairman Jenkins led a virtual ribbon-cutting event that was live streamed for the public to watch. The event highlighted each project’s history and background, and included contributions by some of the key stakeholders and elected officials who supported the projects throughout the development and construction process in east Austin.

The 183 South Project
The Mobility Authority has transformed US 183, previously one of Austin’s most congested corridors, by tripling its capacity with the addition of tolled and non-tolled improvements. At $743 million, it is the largest roadway construction project in Central Texas since SH 130, and the largest project ever led by a local agency. The opening of the 183 Toll Road is a major step forward in developing a comprehensive regional transportation system for Central Texas that offers greater mobility and reliable travel options.

The 290/130 Flyovers Project
In partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation, the Mobility Authority began construction in November 2018 on three flyovers at the interchange of the Mobility Authority’s 290 Toll Road and TxDOT’s SH 130 toll. The contractor was incentivized to complete the 290/130 Flyovers Project on an accelerated timeline, accounting for the early openings of all three connections. The new flyovers provide drivers safe, efficient, free-flowing direct connections between the two roadways, while also freeing up capacity at the frontage road intersection to benefit drivers who prefer the non-tolled option.

183A PHASE III PROJECT
CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN

The Mobility Authority is pleased to announce that construction on the 183A Phase III Project will begin later this month.

With unprecedented growth in Williamson County, most notably in Cedar Park, Leander, and Liberty Hill, traffic volumes along US 183 are anticipated to increase by 183 percent by 2042. The 183A Phase III Project is designed to deliver proactive congestion relief to the area with a 6.6-mile extension of the 183A Toll Road from Hero Way to just north of SH 29, with two tolled lanes in each direction. The new lanes will be located between the existing non-tolled frontage roads and primarily within the existing right-of-way in the median of the US 183 corridor, mitigating disruption to the public during construction. In addition, significant non-tolled improvements will be made, including landscaping, aesthetic elements, and an adjacent shared use path from Hero Way to the Seward Junction Loop.

The 183A Phase III Project will build on the success of the existing 11-mile 183A Toll Road, delivering meaningful mobility relief for Williamson County and our region long into the future.
