Kia Ora - Greetings to you all

Wet Mornings - Dropping off students in our bus bay

Firstly - you are all welcome to cruise through the bus bay to drop off your children from 8:15 to 8:45, being aware of the need to be as safe, purposeful and promptly as smoothly possible. Our buses have right of way, and generally the flow works really well. Wet days sees a huge increase in drop offs; so we need to continue to practice prompt drop offs safely. If you wish to take your child to class, you need to park elsewhere and walk into school. It is not feasible to park in the bus bay.  Overall things are moving really well; but we know the huge safety risks involved in children, cars, buses, wet roads and conditions increase significantly when it is raining.

Please do not plan to drop your children off at 8:45 - the day's programme has commenced. We are working strongly to all children being at school, and moving to class by 8:40am.

After School Bus stop pick-ups

Please remind your students not to walk/run in front of the school bus upon exiting. It has been noticed at the Tarapatiki stop with a few of the Primary School children. Parents/Caregivers are there waiting and perhaps unaware of the danger.  The bus driver has no way of seeing the children under his window, so please be vigilant.

Thank you
John
Primary Years Update
Kia ora e te whānau from the Primary Years,

Our tamariki have been busy this term exploring the topic of identity - including pepeha, making links to our KAURI expectations, what makes us who we are, our similarities and differences, and just this week ‘Growing Good People,’ with helpful tips for our students  and insightful learnings from our very own head girl, Louisa Murie.
Our year 5 and 6 students had sessions with the Life Education facilitator and their old favourite, Harold.  The key themes being identity, being unique, aroha and personality.  Students explored questions like...why is it important to show empathy towards others? Is it ok to be different?  What can we do when we have problems? How do we change as we get older?
The feedback from teachers and the student engagement have been positive.
The amazing year 6 student leaders, with guidance from Mrs Matchett, have started delivering daily notices via zoom to all of the primary years classes.  This is proving to be an authentic and exciting learning experience for all involved.
Next Friday…

Year 3-6 school 80s themed disco
(Being run by our Year 12 and 13 business/tourism class)

At the school hall on April 9th 5pm-6:45pm
$5 entry
Come in your best 80s outfit!

Bring extra money for snacks and drinks ($1 and $2 items)

Year 1s and 2s will be treated to a free disco on the afternoon of the 9th April that is being run by the Year 6 leaders (no snacks...just LOTS of boogie-ing and games).  It's during school time so you don't need to do anything other than send them to school (with a "dress up" to change in to if they want).
Have a great Easter break,
Ngā mihi

If you or someone in your family, neighbours or friends would like to support this event, please see the attached letter here.

Thank you
The Production Team
Room 24 - Flying Seeds
Some seeds have superpowers. We discovered the maple seeds from the tree on the back field can FLY!

We watched with wonder as the seeds we threw in the air spiralled down to the ground like a helicopter. Some travelled a very long way in the gentle breeze showing how seeds can find new places to take root.

We then made our own paper versions and found places to launch them.
M1 - Science
This week we have carried out a little science inquiry into light and colour. We explored how rainbows are made at MysteryScience.com and we have made two types of colour mixers. The boys are using their knowledge to write explanations.
M8 - Cooking up a storm
M8 have been planning what to make and what extra ingredients they need to make it so they can use their lovely kumara that they harvested last week. Then they spent the morning cooking up a storm! Yum, looks delicious.

Ivan Adams - Golf update
Ivan represented Mercury Bay Area School at the Waikato Secondary School Matchplay Championships last week in Te Awamutu.

His qualifying on Monday wasn’t his best but qualified in Division 2 which is still great for a year 9 Student.

He played really well reaching the semifinals. His opponent a year 12 from Cambridge High School beat Ivan after shooting his best round ever.

Overall Ivan finished 12th out of 40 Students in all divisions. He Shot scores of 73, 76.

He then went on to play the Lunden Cup in Cambridge and Morrinsville. He played really well there also with the 3rd lowest gross score for the 2 days. With scores of 77 and 75.

He had a really good week and is very proud of himself.
Restorative Practices Tip of the Week
Connect before you Correct

There are lots of times on any given day where young people need a reminder or some assistance to correct their behaviour. For this correction to ‘land’ as well as possible, it can be really helpful to connect first. It's kind of like how the pilot lets you know that you will be landing soon, rather than letting you get a huge fright when the wheels of the plane hit the ground. If we go straight to correcting behaviour it can sometimes work, but other times it can be a bumpy or even a crash landing. Connecting is how we initiate communication in a non-confrontational way so that the young person is calm. This can be as simple as saying hello and using their name, making a comment or asking a question, or bringing up something positive or neutral from your last interaction. After this you can follow up with the correction.

For example “Hey that looks like an awesome game you're playing, can you please turn the volume down or put your headphones on” or  “How was swimming today? Can you please pick up your togs and towel and hang them out?”

Next time you see behaviour that needs correcting, have a go at connecting first. Hopefully it ‘lands’ smoothly and everybody can keep calm and carry on.
Notes from the Nurse
The HPV vaccine is Free and available to all males and females under the age of 27.

We give the vaccine at Year 8 as young people of that age have a fantastic immune system and therefore only need 2 doses.

If your child has missed out they can have this at the doctors for FREE but may need 3 doses if they are over 14.

This is a FREE cancer vaccine – please watch the YouTube clip below for further information – well worth a look.
