TCS Times

Nau mai, haere mai ngā whānau o te kura o Tahatai.  A very warm welcome to all our TCS students and their families.

Kia Ora Whānau,

This is the final newsletter for Term 1, so I wanted to pass on my appreciation for all you are doing to support your children's learning. As a result, our students have had a wonderful start to the year and are thriving with the rich learning experiences on offer. As a staff, we feel so fortunate to have such supportive whānau, as it is making a real difference to the children's learning and development. Thank you.

I emailed a weblink yesterday for a survey regarding the proposed enrolment zones for our school.  The online survey provides you with an oppotunity to have your say. The two options available for Tahatai are quite different from what was originally proposed. The new options are very similar but the second option includes properties in Hira Crescent, Aspen Place and Haven Grove, and we view these streets as part of our Tahatai and Papamoa community. It would be important to have your say even if the zone changes may not directly affect you or your family. Having your say as a member of the Tahatai community may help see our school zone remain largely unscathed. If you have not completed the survey, simply click on this link: Proposed Zone Survey
A special congratulations to Frankie Hennah, Grace Andrews, Violette Thiel-Lardon and Jacinta Rebagliati for having their paintings selected for the Acorn Foundation Junior Art Awards Exhibition at the Tauranga Art Gallery.  Jacinta won the 6-8 years old section of the awards.

All the selected works can be seen online by clicking on the link below.  The actual exhibition runs until 2nd May.

Also, a shout out to parent, Neil Cudby, for winning the Festival of Disability Sports Supreme Award for Coach of the Year!

On the afternoon of Tuesday 30th March, I was privileged to participate in a hikoi up Kopukairoa, the largest of the hills in the legend of The Whale Mountains (Ngā Maunga Tohorā). Ngākohu, a representative of Ngā Pōtiki, led the hikoi to support the search for a mauri stone for our kura (school). After a solid 60 minute hike to the summit, we found two taonga to represent the essence of the important work that we do for the children and school community. These were gifted by Ngā Pōtiki (Hapū) to Tahatai Coast School after the correct cultural protocols and customs were followed. We will have one mauri buried near the three pou at the front of the school and the other displayed in the foyer of the administration block once it reopens. Our students, whānau, and visitors will be able to touch the mauri and learn a little more about the stories of the land in which Tahatai Coast is situated. I'd like to thank Ngākohu for his time and Ngā Pōtiki for your continued support of the school.
A final reminder that school is closed on the last day of term. All the staff from the Mount Maunganui Schools and Tahatai Coast School will be attending a professional learning day at Mount College on Friday 16th April. The day will be guided by the mantra 'Better Together' - a collective responsibility, where we are exploring how we can work collaboratively to ensure the best possible outcomes for our learners as they move through primary and secondary school.

Ngā mihi

ANZAC Remembrance Assembly at TCS 2021
We will be holding two assemblies in the school hall next Tuesday, 13th April to commemorate all New Zealanders killed in war and to honour all returned servicemen and women.  The first assembly is for our Year 4-6 students and this will begin at 1:30pm.  The second assembly is for our Year 1-3 students and this will begin at approximately 2:00pm.  We will have some representatives from the Mount Maunganui RSA presenting at the Year 4-6 assembly.  Our community is invited to either of these assemblies, but due to the limited space in the hall, seating will be placed outside the hall under cover, or you may need to stand.  If you have whānau members that have served or presently serve in the armed forces and would be willing to be involved, please contact Darren Scott by email, darrens@tahatai.school.nz or by phoning the school directly.

On Anzac Day, our Year 6 Student Council representatives will lay a wreath at an ANZAC Day service on behalf of all of us at Tahatai Coast School.
Urgent Message
re:New Entrant Enrolments

Do you have a child turning 5 this year?

We urgently need an indication of how many 5 year olds we will be expecting during 2021. If you have a child due to start school, please come and see us to complete the enrolment paperwork.

This helps us to plan a smooth transition into school for your child; helps us to plan staffing for the New Entrant classes; and ensures that you are invited to the relevant parent information meetings. Thank you.
Te Whānau ā Tahatai - Coming Term 2!
Te Whānau ā Tahatai (The Family of Tahatai) will be starting up in Term 2 on Monday and Thursday mornings. Essentially, this will be a warm, inviting space in which students can come from 7.30am-8.15am to eat breakfast, spend time with their friends, and relax before their school day begins. It will be located in the hall staffroom. Throughout the year, we hope to add more days, early morning sporting opportunities, games, weekly breakfast guests and cooking.

We are also partnered with the Weetbix Kickstart programme, and Sanitarium is very generously providing Weetbix and milk throughout term 2 and beyond.

If there are any businesses in our community that would be interested in sponsoring Te Whānau ā Tahatai with a one-off or a regular financial contribution to help us provide hot milo, butter and spreads, we would love to hear from you. Please contact: Dianne Pellow in room 26 diannep@tahatai.school.nz

To help make our breakfasts extra special, we would gratefully accept any donations of tinned fruit from our TCS community - tins of fruit can be sent to your child’s classroom and will be collected from there.

International Competitions and Assessments (ICAS) Exams

We are delighted to inform you that Tahatai will be participating in the world-renowned ICAS AssessmentsTM again this year.

ICAS is designed to target students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Writing, Spelling Bee and Digital Technologies.

Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition and development. Every student will receive a printed certificate and an online results report. Top performers will be eligible for medals and are invited to attend special award ceremonies to have their academic excellence publicly recognised.

The assessments are suitable for students wishing to extend themselves academically and take up the personal challenge of competing in an international assessment, which has been running for 40 years. Your child will be presented with high-quality, expert-developed questions, allowing them to apply their learning without the need for prior study or revision.

All exams will be held at school, on the dates below, and are available for the following levels:
