Newsletter

16th April 2021
Robert Mangan,  Principal

Dear Parents, Caregivers & Friends of the College

Thank you to all who have supported the college over what has been a very productive and positive first term of the year, despite the shadow of 'Covid' and Alert level changes hanging over us.

Our boys have had a huge range of opportunities to experience the broad, rich and engaging curriculum we provide both in and out of the classroom, on the sports field and in the cultural arena.  These opportunities and successes have been highlighted in my regular newsletters.  This range is extensive and unmatched by many state schools across the country.  The eleven weeks of the term have been action packed full of activity and positive experiences for our boys.  Our Year 9's were welcomed at the start of the year with a Powhiri at Aronui, challenged to ensure that they make the most of every opportunity available to them at the college and leave it in a better place than when they arrived.  The undoubted highlight for them has been the Year 9 camps at Bowentown, an experience that will be remembered fondly as a highlight of their time at the college.  Our Year 13's have responded to the challenge to show leadership, symbolised by their white shirts.  They have responded to this challenge magnificently with the result being a settled, orderly campus influenced by the role modelling of our senior boys.

Year 11 and 12 boys and their parents were involved in Academic Coaching interviews this week.  The focus was on planning their future pathway and understanding the complexity of NCEA.  Year 10 students have settled back into the year, grateful to no longer be the 'new boys of the college.'

I am very appreciative of the support of our wider community to enable us to offer this breadth of opportunity and I assure you we don't take it for granted.  I am also very grateful to the commitment of our teaching staff who go well beyond what is expected, giving freely of their time outside the classroom to ensure our boys have this vast array of opportunities to participate in and to experience enjoyment and success in whatever form it is measured.  It is important that this commitment is acknowledged and appreciated.

I wish our boys and staff a well deserved holiday and hope as parents you are able to spend some quality time with your sons.  We look forward to welcoming our boys back, safe, refreshed and ready for a productive Term 2 on Monday 3rd May.

Thank you for your continued support.

He is clearly making the most of his opportunities to better himself. He is sensible, reliable, supportive of his peers and conscientious about everything he does. Deane has grown to be a superb role model and the epitome of a 'good man'.

Year 12 - Stanley Wells

Despite this, his attendance is exemplary and his attitude and effort are always absolutely 100%. He makes no excuses for himself, he simply puts his head down and he works really hard until the result he wants is achieved. He is diligence personified.

Year 11 - Suho Jung

Suho is described by his teachers as hard working, respectful and always positive.
He has applied himself well but also led the class in discussion and critical thinking.

Patrick's teachers say that he is a great student to teach. He is polite, cheerful, and respectful and is a fantastic young man who always puts in his best effort.
He has been really keen in class and works well, asking questions if he gets stuck.  Patrick shows all the good man qualities we value here at TBC and sets a great example for the other students in his classes.

Year 9 - Te Karetai Barrett

Te Karetai's teachers have expressed how he is a deserving student of this title.  He is very respectful and hardworking and he displays all the characteristics of a 'good man'.  He turns up to class on time, never forgets his gear, always thanks his teachers after every lesson, completes his work on time, participates in all activities and helps his peers.

National Youth Jazz Competition and Local Schools Trip 2021

This year was a move into new territory for the Big Band as we have moved to a combined Big Band #1 and #2 with Tauranga Girls College. The move has been very successful with the bands having more flexibility with their programming decisions and more skilled musicians to draw upon. Term One held both a small local schools tour as well as the National Youth Jazz Competitions. It was a busy start with getting 4 groups up to performance standard: Big Band #1 and #2 as well as 2 Jazz Combos.

The local mini tour was held just prior to the Jazz Competitions and they visited Greenpark, Welcome Bay, and Selwyn Ridge Primary Schools as well as Tauranga Intermediate. It was a very successful tour with the groups being able to hone their skills and performance etiquette as well as promote music to the local schools and show them what is available when they get to college.

The National Youth Jazz Competition was held at the new days leading into Easter rather than the actual Easter holidays. This meant a lot more schools were able to participate in the festival.

44 groups were all going for top honours including schools from Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland. The event was well run and a great experience was had by the bands that attended. Our groups were as follows:

Big Band #1: Jacques van Rinsfelt, Marcus Louie, Toby McGuffie, Adara Burns, Rose Bruning, Sylvester Green, Sophia Tak, Taiwhakaea Togo-Hawkins, Mikaela Percival, Benjamin Louie (Big Band Leader), Matilda Vahey Bourne, Ben Goodjohn, Hemorere Heke-Ririnui, Taine Larsen, Michael van Lieshout, Grace Tak, Jacob Yoon, Judy Shin, Tearani Wikohika, Zion Ormsby, Aaron McDaniel.

Big Band #2: Zion Ormsby, Elliot Mair, Seth Lattie, Patrick Hatch, Brooklyn Le Comte, Benjamin Goodjohn, Thomas Logger, Adara Burns, Kell Crowther, Hemorere Heke-Ririnui, Mikaela Percival, Sophia Tak, Matilda Vahey Bourne, Maea Wikohika, Tearani Wikohika, Kyla Van Silfhout.

Jazz Combo #1: Benjamin Louie, Toby McGuffie, Zion Ormsby, Michael van Lieshout, Jacob Yoon.

Jazz Combo #2: Darcy Bassett, Patrick Hatch, Taine Larsen, Aaron McDaniel, Jacques Van Rinsfelt.

With two days of competition at the highest standard the combined bands and combos came away with the following awards:

TBC/TGC Big Band #1 - Gold Award
TGC/TBC Big Band #2 - Silver Award
TBC Jazz Combo #1 - Gold Award
TBC Jazz Combo #2 - Silver Award
The TBC Jazz Combo also were awarded the inaugural L & M Mason Trophy for best Musicianship.
Michael Van Lieshout was awarded the individual title ‘MAYERS MUSIC CENTRE TROPHY - Most Outstanding Guitarist'

FUTSAL NATIONALS 2021

Tauranga Boys’ College has been working on development and skills since futsal started at TBC 5 years ago. During this time we have been fortunate to have the skills and experience of George Gall and Mario Ramos to coach our young men. The pathway for the Futsal Nationals this year began with providing opportunities for both the Junior and Senior teams to play and compete at the highest levels. From going to Auckland and Hamilton competitions and playing in the Regional Champs, we have developed and grown as a group of young players.

The Junior team has great potential with a thrilling final in the regionals against Rotorua BHS and losing on penalties to a solid effort at the nationals placing 13th (on reflection could have made top 8). The senior team had been very strong with solid performances leading up to nationals in both the Super 6 and Regional Champs - winning both. Going into Nationals the team from TBC were ‘the team to beat’ and the word was they were very strong. In pool play the team won their first 3 pool games and were well positioned for a top 8 spot. Moving to the quarter finals the senior squad came up against Rongotai College, previous national winners and Wellington Champs. A solid display for the TBC boys proved too much for Rongotai and TBC took the game 3-Nil. The semi-finals proved to be a challenge coming up against the top team of Hamilton Boys’. It was a tough game but the TBC team won with a close game and 3-2 win. Moving to the finals TBC came up against previous Champs and top rated Wellington College. The game was fast and furious with a half time score of 3-1 to Wellington. Many had already given the game to Wellington but with tenacity and will the boys surged back to level the score to 4-4 at the final whistle. Extra time and TBC scored in the first 30 seconds putting Wellington College on the back foot and taking control of the game. A second goal a few minutes later secured the win and the title for National Champions for Tauranga Boys’ College Futsal. Congratulations to the team for their outstanding win.

Special mention to Jackson Gilbert - Golden Gloves and Vincent Phirun - Tournament MVP.

Huge congratulations to our Senior Futsal Team - National Champions!Mario Ramos Jr (Assistant Coach), John Page (Manager), Ry McLeod, Thomas Page, Joshua Sutcliffe, Makaha Vieira-Gall, Kalani Vieira-Gall, Mario Ramos Sr (Head Coach), George Gall (Assistant Coach), Maddix Kamo, Kyan Cundy, Tristan Kawana, Vincent Phirun (MVP), Jack Pateman (Captain), Jackson Gilbert (Golden Gloves), Aran Carter.

COLLEGE EXCURSIONS
YEAR 9 INQUIRY TRIP TO AONGATETE FOREST

Last week both Y9 Inquiry classes travelled to Aongatete Forest Park as part of their study of pest species in the Bay of Plenty.  They were hosted by the Bay Conservation Alliance who showed the boys examples of different pests and also the different methods used to control them in the forest including tracking tunnels, poison, and a range of traps. The class split into small groups and had to check a trap line in the forest area, clearing any pests that were caught and recording this for the GIS data system that the group use. The class revelled in the opportunity to learn outside the classroom and we are grateful for the opportunity that was fully funded by the Bay Conservation Alliance.
YEAR10 INQUIRY CAMP TO HILLARY OUTDOORS
PART TIME WORK REQUIRED

For the past two years, Y10 students in the Inquiry Learning programme have had the opportunity to attend the five day Hillary Step programme at the Great Barrier Island Hillary Outdoors centre. This programme focuses on personal development and pushes students outside their comfort zone. A past student commented: "There were definitely tough times and I'm proud of how the boys stepped up to complete our expedition. I highly recommend it and will always remember that camp." As part of the challenge, we want the boys to earn their way there rather than just rely on the bank of Mum & Dad. A number of the boys have already started part time work and are contributing some of their earnings to help pay the significant cost. Some boys have even started a small business refurbishing old computers to sell. If anyone in the wider TBC community has job opportunities for some keen Y10 students, can you please get in touch with Andrew Corney at a.corney@tbc.school.nz
LEVEL 2 GEOGRAPHY TRIP

A recent Level 2 Geography trip to Tongariro National Park was enjoyed by 22 boys supported by three teaching staff.
FUTURE PATHWAYS

STP

Mrs Stanley

  • Has been working one on one with all the STP boys. She has also had a focus on Mindfulness sessions. This involves students reflecting on their current mix of feelings and acknowledging solo activities that ‘empty/quieten their minds e.g. running, skating, driving, going to the gym. There is a conscious effort to do this each day to encourage routines & habits.

Mr Smith's class

  • The final touches were made to the ‘leaners’ for OED/Health rooms.

  • The boys had a celebratory lunch after digging a trench for the electrics to the container behind the Devoy Squash & Fitness Centre.  Once finished this will become a further workshop base for them.
Mr Hind's class
  • Continue to work on the build of the deck for the Expresso Cafe along with the set for Jesus Christ Superstar.
Pasifika
  • The Homo Haia Homework Hub continues to be a successful initiative with as many as 54 students attending from both TGC and TBC.  The feedback from the students shows it is worth it, with some saying it is the first time they have been able to get assessments in on time.
  • The performance group is starting to prep for the Cultural Super 8 Festival early next term.
  • The boys went to Selwyn Ridge Primary School just before Easter to mentor and perform.  One of their staff commented "what an absolutely outstanding job today!  What amazing role models you ALL are.  You not only performed with great pride and respect but also became the teachers and taught us your dance with great perseverance, patience and passion!"
Careers
  • Senior boys who are interested in a career in the Defence forces recently attended a seminar.
  • There was an Otago University Liaison update held at TGC for interested parents and students which Mr Meys also attended.
  • Career planning is continuing with Yr 12’s .
  • Outward Bound nominees have been confirmed. They are: Tom Hughes and Micah Pugh.

Future Pathways

  • This term we have had a number of Old Boys' who have shared their career story to date with interested Senior students.  Last week we welcomed back Timoti Gardiner (1998 - 2002), a local Community Constable, who provided a realistic overview of what life in the Police force entails.
Gateway
  • There are 15 students involved in the Level 2 Seeds programme.  Service IQ ran the two day theory component this week and then during the holidays the students will spend five days learning the 'day to day' running of a Countdown store.
  • The Trades Academy Food Processing course held on Wednesdays at Pacific Coast Technical Institute, now has 11 students attending.

WORKDAY - FRIDAY 14TH MAY 2021

On Friday 14th May we are holding our annual Work Day (unfortunately cancelled last year due to COVID-19).  “Work Day” is an opportunity for your son to give back to the college and raise additional funds towards college facilities and equipment, over and above government funding.

In recent years funds raised through “Work Day” have provided chilled water fountains, outdoor Basketball hoops, bleachers for the gymnasium and Nicholson field, sports and arts equipment.  All our current students reap the benefits of boys who have previously contributed through Work Day.

This years’ “Work Day” funds are being targeted towards an additional chilled water fountain, lunchtime sports and arts equipment as well as enhancing the overall college facilities.

If you do not support your sons’ involvement in “Work Day” he can attend the college on Friday 14th May to be supervised for the hours of the normal school day.

A form has been sent home for you to complete regarding your son's workday involvement.

REQUESTS FOR HOLIDAYS
DURING TERM TIME
I am concerned with the number of requests I receive from parents for time off for their sons during school term to travel in New Zealand for holidays.

I understand the educational value of travel but remind parents to be mindful of the impact time away from the classroom can have on your son's academic achievement.

Of particular concern is when this absence occurs at the same time NCEA internal assessments are planned, as this can have a significant effect on your son's NCEA results.

Ministry of Education regulations only allow me to give permission for absence from school due to illness or family bereavement and advise that all trips / holidays should be taken during official school holiday periods.

I would ask that all requests for leave are sent to me at principal@tbc.school.nz

My preference is for all leave of this nature to occur during the school holidays.  Leave from school for holiday travel that is taken outside of school holiday periods will be recorded as "explained but unjustified".

Thank you for your assistance with this.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
School Health Service

The school nurses this year are Vicki (Mon-Thurs) and Kathrine (Thurs-Fri). They are both fully registered nurses funded by the Western BOP Primary Health Organisation. Their clinic is located down by the gym and there is no cost for the youth health services. This is in addition to the sickbay team at the main office with whom the nurses work closely, to provide best care to the boys at TBC.  There is also a GP who does a short clinic each Monday for those who may face barriers to accessing their own GP.

In an attempt to support our young men with any challenges and to identify any barriers to learning at an early stage.  These assessments include discussion around; physical health, growth and development, hearing, vision, eating and weight, behaviour, school and home, drugs and alcohol, sexuality, mood and safety (HEADDSS).

Cameron Road safety improvements near Tauranga Boys' College

Futureproofing Cameron Road is starting some early works at the end of April in preparation for the main construction works expected to start before September this
year. While we are still reviewing feedback to finalise the detailed design plan, there is some work that Tauranga City Council can get underway now.

We want to make sure everyone traveling along Cameron Road has real travel choice and can move safely whatever way they choose to move – whether by public transport, walking, by bike, or by car.

Some of this early work, designed to improve safety, will take place on Cameron Road between 13th and 15th Avenue – in front of Tauranga Boys High School.

These works include:
  • A new safe signalised pedestrian crossing
  • Closure of the righthand turn from Cameron Road into 14th Avenue to minimise dangerous turning movements near the new crossing.

This work is starting the week commencing 26 April and we expect this work to take approximately one month. During construction of these improvements temporary traffic management will be in place on Cameron Road and there may be some detours at times.  Please check www.tauranga.govt.nz/cameronroad for more details and updates.
