Holy Week 2021

Dear Friends,

Looking back on my Palm Sunday musical reflection from last year (I know: you have been subjected to these for quite long enough!) in order to ensure no repetition of music, I saw that I had written about this day as a moment where we hold in our hearts the full vision of Holy Week. Holding up our palm crosses this morning reminded me again of just that point. We carried those crosses in procession - into church - as a reminder that we are not simply enacting a past event. These crosses tell us that we know the story, and that we can and should carry the whole of it in our hearts as we journey to the foot of the cross and beyond to the empty tomb on Easter Day. We hold to the promise of the empty tomb on Good Friday as surely as we cling to the cross; and we, like the risen Christ, are as aware of those glorious scars as we are of his resurrected life at the great celebration of Easter.

For today’s musical reflection, I offer you a piece for each day of this great and holy week. If you use them, I hope they prove an aid to your prayers as we set aside this week for the best and greatest thing we could ever do.
