2nd April 2021

From the Headteacher

We've made it to the end of term! Many thanks to all the staff, students and families for your support of the return to school in March, home testing, face coverings, and all the additional steps we have had to accommodate due to the pandemic. I hope that we are now seeing light towards the end of the tunnel - but we are still in the tunnel, so it is essential that all of us continue to be cautious over the coming weeks and months. We must continue to observe the restrictions, completing home tests twice weekly throughout the Easter period (see below), and staying safe so we can all enjoy an uninterrupted summer.
Many of our students will have assessment preparation to complete over Easter. Students will know how important this is, and we wish them all well with their revision and preparation work. I would also urge everyone to ensure that they take time to rest, relax and recharge so they are energised and ready to do their absolute best when we return to school from 19th April.
All that remains is for me to wish all of you a happy, healthy and safe Easter holiday.  We will see you in Term 5!

Headteacher's Blog: Happy Easter

The Christian festival of Easter has its roots in earlier, pagan festivals which celebrated the awakening of nature in spring time. In this week's blog I explore the origins of Easter, explain why the date moves around each year, and reflect on how a festival of resurrection and rebirth feels more appropriate this year than ever. Click here to read the blog.

COVID-19 Home Testing

Home testing should continue through the Easter holidays, with tests twice a week, 3-4 days apart. All students should have sufficient test kits to maintain this testing programme.

Results from home tests should be uploaded direct to NHS Test and Trace according to the instructions included in the kit. Results should also be reported to the Academy via the Google Form.

If a home test result is positive, you must:
  1. Self-isolate
  2. Inform the Academy by phone (01934 852771) and/or email
  3. Book a confirmatory PCR test
Remember that home test kits using lateral flow devices are only for people without symptoms of COVID-19. If your child has any symptoms, you must book a PCR test
Report a COVID-19 home test result to the Academy

New local bus routes

Following the withdrawal of the A5 bus service, we have been informed that three new local bus routes are being introduced to serve the local community - including direct routes, solely for Academy students, directly to our coach loop.

The 51 route runs from Weston-super-Mare to Langford via Churchill, Winscombe, Banwell and Haywood Village. This is supplemented by the 51s service, solely for Academy students, serving Winscombe and Sandford.

The 991 (Langford-Wrington) and the 992 (Langford-Blagdon) minibus service will be accompanied by a 991s route exclusively for Academy students, serving Wrington.

Please see our website page for further details of these new routes, including timetables.

School Gates

Our new electronic gates at the entrances to the Academy will be activated over the Easter holidays so we can test them thoroughly and ensure they are working as they should, before everyone starts back to school on 19th April. Once active, they will be open for entrance and exit at the following times:

Coach Loop vehicle gate:
7.40am - 9am for drop-off
2.45pm - 3.30pm for pick-up

Pedestrian gates:
7.40am - 9am
3.05pm - 3.30pm

At all other times there is an intercom system so you can speak to reception to be permitted access to the site. This system will help to ensure we can keep all our students safe.

Gavin Williamson, Secretary of State for Education, issued this letter to children and young people last week.

Somerset Anne Frank Youth Awards invite nominations from parents, carers and teachers

Have you noticed the outstanding contribution that a young person you know has made? It has been a tough year and many young people have gone the extra mile to make a difference in their schools and communities. We invite parents, carers and teachers to shine the light on these young people by nominating them for a Somerset Anne Frank Youth Award (SAFYA). The Awards celebrate pupils from Year 5 – Year 13 (9-18 years old).
The story of Anne Frank is relevant now, more than ever, which is why the SAFYA Committee want to continue to spread her message and story by recognising and honouring young people across Somerset who demonstrate our three core values:
  • Actively opposing discrimination, bullying and prejudice
  • Supporting and caring for others in need
  • Working within conflict resolution and social inclusion
We believe that these Awards spotlight the hard work and contributions of young people, which are crucial to promoting a positive, kind, and inclusive society.  Nominations for our Awards programme are now OPEN! All submissions must be made via our website, where you can also find out more information. The deadline for entries is Wednesday 2nd June 2021, with the Awards Ceremony being held at Wells Cathedral on the evening of Wednesday 14th July 2021.

North Somerset Parent Carers Working Together (NSPCWT)

North Somerset Parent Carers Working Together (NSPCWT) has a vision that every child and young person in North Somerset with a disability or additional need reaches their full potential. NSPCWT's purpose is to improve the service, provision and the quality of life for children and young people with disabilities and additional needs by being the collective voice of parent carers and a strategic partner for the Local Authority, Education and Health. Parents or carers with children between the ages of 0-25 which have any additional need or disability, can contact NSPCWT on any social media platform, their websiteadmin@nspcwt.org or
07434 678832

NSPCWT can help by offering an environment of support where any questions can be asked or any concerns raised which they can take forward to the relevant professional bodies to try and encourage change for the future. They run big and small events, share regular coffee meetings via zoom for parent carers to meet and have a chat plus interesting informative zooms with support professionals such as Healthwatch, Sirona Care & health plus the Local Authority SEND team.

Recently NSPCWT released their Annual Survey on how provision in North Somerset is for parent carers, seeking their views on education, health & social care services that they have accessed in the past 12 months. The experiences help NSPCWT convey the reality of how provision is for parent carers to decision makers in North Somerset.  The survey should take no longer than 30 minutes and you could be in with a chance of winning one of eight Amazon E-vouchers - 1st prize £100 - as long as your email address is included.  Any questions please message NSPCWT's Facebook page or email admin@nspcwt.org.

Mental Health support for Young People

The Violence Reduction Unit at North Somerset Council has advised of a two day mental health bootcamp for 14 - 19 year olds, run by OTR, where they can unlock some of OTR's skills and techniques to improve their mental health, and gain ideas on how to manage the return to education. Sign up here.

Litter

We have received complaints that students are dropping litter when walking around the local community.  Please can we remind everyone to respect the environment and communities wherever they are, and dispose of litter appropriately. Thank you.
