April 2021 Student Experiences Update

Exploring with Scientists Webinars

Audience: 5th-8th students (classrooms and home learners welcome)

Free!

During these webinars, students will:

  • engage with real scientists and learn more about their research

  • walk through a real-life science experiment and see what (field) research is like in order to answer a scientific question

  • ask questions about a scientist’s career, education, research, and other related topics

  • reflect on their own experiences with science and broaden their definition of science and the work of scientists

How Do Some Frogs Avoid Extinction? With Kyle Jaynes

When: April 8th, 10:00-11:00am

Join Kyle to learn about the field of herpetology. Grow your knowledge of amphibians and reptiles and find out what's being done to increase their populations, and how some species, like Harlequin frogs in Ecuador, avoid extinction.

Do Birds Avoid Noisy Habitats? with Elizeth Cinto-Mejia

When: April 22nd, 10:00-11:00am

Come learn about birds, noise pollution and conservation. Elizeth will describe how she asks the question “Do birds avoid noisy habitats?” and how scientists like Elizeth study birds and other species present in an ecosystem.

Where Do Moths Carry Pollen On Their Bodies? with Alice Puchalsky

When: May 6th, 10:00-11:00am

Join Alice in exploring the Lepidopteran world. Learn how moths interact with their environment, their important role as pollinators and how scientists are working to conserve them.

Champions of the Sky: How Birds of Prey Hunt With Elizeth Cinto-Mejia

Audience: Elementary and up

When: April 15th, 6:00-6:40pm

Come learn about different hunting strategies that birds-of-prey use to look for food. From larger hawks like red-tailed hawks, to smaller ones like sharp-shinned hawks, wing shape plays an important role in the habitat where they can hunt and what prey they can eat. Whether you are in the city or a forest, explore places where you can see common birds-of-prey in Michigan. Attendees will also learn about how owls use unique strategies to hunt during the night and how noise pollution could impact their hunting. Bring a sheet of paper and your family to participate in an ‘in-home’ flight demo!

A Look Under Ground: Why Root Interactions Matter for Plants, Climate and Humans With Tayler Chicoine-Ulbrich

Audience: High School and up

When: April 27th, 7:30-8:00 pm

Do a plant’s neighbors matter? To answer this question scientists study plant roots and what they do in the soil. Hidden below the surface, roots play a tremendous role--from the size of few microns to whole landscapes--on the lives of soil microbes, plants, and even humans. Join us to meet a team of incredible MSU scientists, learn how they design experiments to study soil and roots, and find out how they apply what they uncover to growing plants to make plant-based fuels.
