Product Focus Monday

Our Dutch Products

Another short week, another Monday.  Time for our weekly product focuss newsletter.

When you visit the Deli, you might think we have a Dutch family-connection!  No, not really, but we do have a dear friend who is working at a Dutch import company and through her we can get our hands on various authentic Dutch products.

Today we would like to introduce a few of our Dutch products.  Some are well-known, other not so much.

Casteleijn Stroopwafels

These buttery-sugary-waffles are a typical Dutch top seller.  They come 8 in a packet and can be eaten when heated a little by placing it on your coffee cup or just like they are!

A waffle is baked first, then cut round and cut horizontally and filled with the traditional butter caramel syrup.

There use to be a lady at our local market making pizza-size stroopwafels, serving them still warm.  It is a true art to make them.

You can also buy the 8-pack in a tin (Blikjes Stroopwafels) - an ideal gift for someone.

Find it online, selling from R40.00 for 8 & R90.00 for the tin

Speculoos butter and Speculaas cookies

If you have been to Europe, especially Holland, you would have come across Speculoos.  Speculoos is the cookie butter made from Speculaas cookies. So, Speculaas cookies are the cookies, and when made into a sweet spread or cookie butter, it then becomes Speculoos.

We stock both the Speculoos cookie butter (smooth or crunchy) as well as the Speculaas cookies.  The cookie butter can be eaten straight from the jar (you really just need a teaspoon!).

So, whát is Speculaas?  Speculaas is a type of spiced shortcrust biscuit, traditionally baked for consumption on or just before St Nicholas' day in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg (beginning of December), and around Christmas in Germany and Austria.

You can find it all year round at the Deli.

Find it online, R35.00 (speculaas) & R90.00 (speculoos)

Amsterdammers

These Dutch treats are small round cakes, filled with thick almond paste, buttery and delicious and a smaller version of the Dutch Butter Cake.

Why the name Amsterdammertje?  No one knows.  Well, the Internet doesn’t know, and our supplier also doesn’t know.

People call it a ‘rondo’ too, due to the round shape.  Come get your’s when you visit the Deli next time!  Or order online!  Ideal for a later afternoon snack with your coffee.

Find it online, selling @ R15.00 each
