OVERVIEW

This event, hosted by the APA Women & Planning Division, honors our membership on the last day of Women's History Month with a happy hour style networking opportunity. The event is designed to include a 1-hour educational component feature two incredible women planners in leadership positions. Leading public sector teams and initiatives is both rewarding and challenging. A must-attend for any planner considering (or already serving in) public sector executive positions, the event focuses on the unique experiences and critical skills women directors need with leaders from around the country. Designed to appeal to planners in varying career stages, the conversation will contain advice for those looking to advance as well as strategies for professionals already in an executive role. Topics to be discussed include preparing and positioning for leadership, being strategic about one’s career, navigating the political realm (both elected officials and interdepartmental/inter-agency), staff engagement and accountability, and maintaining work/life balance. The speakers will outline their own individual career paths, executive best practices, and lessons learned for success in senior leadership.
 

SPEAKERS

Linda Tatum, FAICP

Linda F. Tatum, FAICP, brings more than 34 years of professional experience in urban planning, and community development. She is the Director of the City of Long Beach’s Development Services Department, which provides planning, building safety, code enforcement, housing and neighborhood services to the community of over 470,000 residents. There are approximately 1,330 active short-term rentals (STRs) in Long Beach’s unregulated marketplace, and Ms. Tatum is engaged in the City’s effort to develop a STR ordinance. The STR ordinance is scheduled to be adopted in early 2019, allowing for a current perspective on this controversial subject.
 

Margaret Wallace Brown, AICP

As Planning Director for the City of Houston, Margaret Wallace Brown oversees the City’s regional and community-based planning efforts, including land-development standards and neighborhood character preservation programs, including historic preservation. She leads the City’s strategic transportation and community planning efforts, including the Mayor’s signature Complete Communities Initiative. She also oversees the City’s geographic mapping efforts. During her thirty-three-year tenure in the City’s Planning Department, Wallace Brown has participated in a diverse array of projects that have had a profound effect on Houston. Currently, a primary focus is the Livable Places Action Committee, a group charged with implementing recent plans calling for regulatory changes that will encourage compact, affordable housing. In 2017, she served on the Hurricane Harvey recovery task force, providing critical information to Houstonians rebuilding after the devastating storm and provided support to the City’s Office of Resilience that resulted in Resilient Houston, the City’s call for transformational change to address flooding and other catastrophes. In 2015, she provided leadership to the creation of Houston’s first General Plan, Plan Houston. In 2011 she led the city’s landmark redistricting process that increased the number of City Council members from 9 to 11. In addition, she has overseen numerous city limit expansions and annexations through utilizing Strategic Partnership Agreements, a program that taps into a revenue source that now equals seven percent of all City sales tax collections. While most of her City tenure is policy-related, Wallace Brown began her career as an interiors architect for Interfin Corporation after obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture from the University of Houston. She is accredited through the American Institute of City Planners (AICP) and holds a Charrette System Certification from the National Charrette Institute. She holds accreditation from the Congress for New Urbanism and is a Certified Public Manager from Sam Houston State University Continuing Education. She currently serves as Treasurer for the Women & Planning Division of APA and has leadership positions with the Houston Section and the Texas Chapter. She received the Texas Chapter President’s Award for work as Newsletter Editor in 2000. She has also served on the Board of Directors for American Institute of Architects, Houston; the Bellaire Nature Discovery Center; West University Elementary and St. Pius X High Schools parent associations; Chi Omega Fraternity; and the Junior League of Houston.
