School and District News

Greetings Families,

This Chimney Flyer finds us in a uniquely unusual time in history. For over a year, we have been charged with finding some sense of normalcy where there is uncertainty. Over the next few days, Chapman students will be returning to school or remaining online. This change can bring with it a multitude of emotions for parents, teachers, and students. As parents, you made the difficult decision regarding whether to send your child to hybrid learning or to keep them at home in the comprehensive distance learning (CDL) environment. The process of making that decision has come with some upheaval as we reconfigure cohorts and assign new teachers to students that we have come to know and love. Please know that, whether your child joins us in the building or on the screen, whether they are continuing with the same teacher or getting to know a new one, we are excited to be working with your children and are determined to make the remainder of the 20-21 school year phenomenal. Below are more details with information you will need as we move into this next phase. (Please see the previous Flyer for preliminary details.)

Hybrid Arrival & Dismissal

Our doors will open 7 minutes prior to the start of school, so 7:53 for the AM cohort starting at 8:00 and 12:08 for the PM cohort starting at 12:15. We will have students assigned to 4 different entries. Please see the Chapman Campus Map for your child’s designated entry. Students will be expected to stay 6 feet apart as they line up to enter. Upon entry, each student will be checked to make sure they are wearing a mask and  for any symptoms of illness. As a reminder, parents and all other non-staff adults are not allowed in the building. If you are dropping off your child and want to stand in line with them, please remain socially distant from students that are not your own, as well as other families.

All dismissals will be done on the blacktop along Raleigh. Teachers will line their students up outside and and release them individually to go to the bus, meet their caregiver, or go to our designated spot for Friendly House staff (the turf). If you are picking up your child, you will be asked to wait on the grass by the blacktop until the teacher releases your child to you. Please be aware that the campus will be off limit as we dismiss students--this includes the play structure. It will be closed for public use until 3:00.

Our first students will be returning this week, with our AM kindergartners and 1st graders joining us on Thursday, and our PM kindergartners and 1st graders joining on Friday. All others will start on Monday, April 5th. Also, please note that students will continue with online asynchronous work (this means no class meetings) for the remainder of the week as we prepare for their return to the building.

Meal Service

PPS Nutrition Services will be providing free “grab & go” meals for any student that wants one. We will be handing these out as students leave the building. They can take both a lunch to eat at home and a breakfast for the next day. Any family remaining in CDL can come to pick up meals outside by the blacktop between 10:30-10:45 or 2:45-3:00.

COVID Testing Consent Form

Please check your email for an important message (titled Health & Safety Reminder) from the district about COVID testing protocols. If your child has COVID symptoms and you would like us to test them, we do need the consent form filled out and submitted to our school health assistant at drobertso@mesd.k12.or.us.

Childcare during Hybrid and CDL
For information from Portland Public Schools regarding childcare, please click the following link:  PPS childcare website

In addition, 211info  offers child care referrals for all types of programs (including Boys and Girls Club and community centers) throughout Multnomah County. Parents can text, call or search for programs online.

I know there are still many more questions. If you are able to join, I am holding a Q & A session tomorrow morning at 9:00: Link to Q & A

Chapman Virtual Talent Showcase Recap

Our Chapman performers did a fantastic job.  All the showcased talent provided fun family entertainment.  Such a variety of talent that would only have been possible virtually.  We had 56 submittals across all grades including awesome 5th grade hosts and staff submissions.  The winners of the Talent Show (based on participation by class) was a 3-way tie between Sievers, Rosoff, and Forst.  The special prize will be featured in a live class meeting in the very near future.

Chapman Art Auction

Greetings Chapman Families,

Due to challenges with scheduling and with safety being our number one priority, the Auction Committee has decided to postpone the amazing class art projects until next year when we can all safely be together again.

With that said, we invite any creative families who would like to make a piece of art within your household or small school pod to sell at the auction to please do so! =)  The class art projects are usually the highlight of the auction and bring in the most money!  We'd really love your help!!

In the past, art that sells well is anything Chapman, Portland, or Oregon themed, not to limit other great ideas!

If you would like to donate a piece of art, please email Brandin at
 Brandin@sacral-space.com for more information!

Remember to add our 2021 Auction Week to your calendars for May 16th-21st. Full event details coming soon.

Thank you for your support,
The 2021 Chapman Auction Committee
