Humpty Dumpty

Listen to Today's Devotion

My brother recently sent me a short clip from a sermon in which Pastor Tony Evans compared the story of Humpty Dumpty to the world in which we find ourselves. It's a simple nursery rhyme, but don't miss this application.

"Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall ... he was in an exalted position, and life was good. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall ... something happened that was outside of his control. All the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put Humpty together again ... his friends ran to earthly power centers for help and were left disappointed."

If we've learned anything in the last year, it's that there's only one hope. There's only one place we can turn in times of trouble. Political leaders will fail. Wealth and influence are fleeting. Psalm 20:7 says it best, "Some want to trust in horses, and some trust in chariots ... but we trust in the name of the Lord our God!"

Perhaps you're feeling discouraged because of events that are no fault of your own. The light at the end of the tunnel is fading fast. You feel hopeless and alone.

I've got some good news. There's someone who understands. This week reminds us that hope springs eternal even amid sorrow, suffering, and loneliness. The One who was left sealed up in a tomb by his enemies on Friday conquered death, hell, and the grave on Sunday.

Today He has a message for you. "Be strong and courageous ... don't be afraid or discouraged because I'm with you every step of the way" (Joshua 1:9). Not only is He right beside you at this very moment, but He's also preparing a home for you in Heaven. It's a place where there will be no more death and no more sorrow ... it's a place where all things will be made new (Revelations 20).

The answer to broken lives like yours, mine, and Humpty Dumpty's is found in the person of Jesus Christ. If you haven't done so already, invite Him into your heart today.

He Reigns,
Steve and Tricia Whitaker
