Carly's Story
Carly was diagnosed with a rare form a cancer, Angiosarcoma, in February 2013. In February it was the 8 year anniversary from Carly's diagnosis. Carly has always been really firm that Cancer is a word and not a sentence. She has never viewed it as a battle or a fight, instead a journey. 8 years ago they told Carly she would not survive 5 years - they were wrong. They didn't know the drive this amazing woman has to live, her spirit and love of life. Like most journeys this one has not been all smooth sailing.

Last October Carly was admitted to hospital for back pain - angiosarcoma had spread to her spine and fractured several vertebrae. Whilst in hospital her humorous shattered whilst sitting up in bed - a tumour had eaten away at the bone. Carly underwent a reverse shoulder replacement as well as pain management for her back.
Only last week in Mid-March one of Carly's vertebrae (L3) shattered and Carly was rushed back to hospital for spinal fusion with 10 rods inserted.

In December a doctor attempted to talk to Carly about time left. In true Carly spirit she politely kicked the doctor out of her hospital room - this has never been a topic of conversation - life is meant to be lived. Nearly four months later with the support of her family and friends, her medical team including both a traditional and naturopathic oncologist and from Silver Chain who provide home support, Carly is at home and kicking goals. We have had some amazing support from friends and the community to help make our home safe and accessible.

As you can tell Carly is still well and truly on her journey, but is living the journey on her own terms. So what is Angiosarcoma: Angiosarcoma (http://www.cureasc.org/about-us/) is one of the most aggressive cancers and has a dismal prognosis with a 5 year overall survival rate of 30%. It is also extremely rare. As you may have worked out, Carly is past the 5 year average survival period - due mainly to her lifestyle choices, positive attitude and strength.

Carly and Andrew are forever grateful to everyone that has donated money previously to help Carly on her journey. So far, Carly's treatment has cost more than $90,000. She continues regular chemotherapy, as well as a range of complimentary therapies, physical therapy and mind-set techniques. She works with both her oncologist and naturopathic oncologist.

Woodside Nippers

What a spectacular weekend to finish off the Nippers season of 2020/21! Thanks again to all our mighty Nippers for having a crack this season and being part of the mighty mighty Sorrento team!

Friday night we had a marvelous turnout for our U10 to U13 awards night . Thank you to Amanda, Bernadette and the rest of the club staff for looking after the crew, thank you to Andrew for organizing the medals and trophies and Jess for sorting out the adjustments.

Congratulations to all our medal winners and our Club Champions and Age Manager award recipients. You have all had an outstanding season so well done. I would like to make mention of the Nippers who came along to support their teammates knowing they weren’t receiving any accolades on the night, you are the ultimate teammates and Sorrento is proud to have you as part of the team!

Sunday was a perfect day to run our Presidents Marathon. Thanks to Burchy, Belly, Reevsy, Craig, Mrs Bell and David for the setup of the Nippers course  and to Glenn, Mathew and Latif for setting up the Little Presidents Marathon course.

For those that weren’t there on Sunday morning for the address to the team and team photo, I made special mention of the Beach Boys who set up every week so again thank you to Ronnie, Bob, John, Jeff, Adrian and other parents that assist from time to time. Thank you so much for your efforts over the whole season!

To our BBQ coordinator Anthony Chin and bacon and egg chief Darren Bender, I can not thank you enough for  your dedication to raising much-needed funds for the junior program.

Thank you to our Youth members that supervised the inflatables you guys rock! Cheers to Marina and Michelle for overseeing and organizing the volunteers for the morning.

Thank you to Nicole, Tanneal and Paula for looking after the wristbands and Age Managers refreshments along with our White Cap parents who were rostered on the BBQs for the last day, what a great effort!

To say I’m proud of what we as a club have achieved this season is an understatement and I’m fortunate to be part of an enthusiastic and driven team. Thank you to all our Junior committee along with our coaches without your involvement and passion the task would be impossible!

As always thank you to the Directors and our office staff for the support they have given us over the season.

This Wednesday night will be the last Board Training session for the season and for those that are keen to keep training for the winter, keep an eye out for the post of winter board training starting back up after our four-week break.

We hope to have information ASAP about the Pool rescue season which is going to kick off shortly for our 12 year old and over Nippers along with other family members. I’d also encourage you to possibly get a team together or swim it yourself in the Waterman’s to the Wall.

For those families that were able to contribute to the gift I received from our awesome captains on Friday night. I really do appreciate your generosity, it’s not the reason I’m involved in the Junior Program and I find it humbling and slightly embarrassing to receive such a fantastic gift from you all.

We really do have the best and most generous families at Sorrento, thank you to Sally and Kacy for coordinating such a thoughtful presentation.

I wish all our families a safe and enjoyable Easter break before getting back into winter sports or back training for next season I thank you for choosing Sorrento and look forward to 2021/22 being a bigger and better.

Most pleasing for the competition committee is that there was at least one and (in many cases two) Sorrento team in the final of every youth relay event across the weekend.

This is testament to our fabulous committed coaches who provide so many hours of coaching and encouragement;  a particular thanks goes to Lisa Thomson, Theresa Gartlin, Claire Rafferty, Michael Booth, Andrew Ridley and Graham Snook  for their tireless support of the youth athletes and to Jeff, Tim, and the rest of Sunday morning leaders who have helped identify and support some great emerging talent this season.

Our athletes have shown commitment, flexibility, and great team spirit throughout the weekend and the season  - thank you all for your efforts

Thanks
