8 April

Joy and I have greatly appreciated your thoughtful support as we worked to replace the irreplaceable!

Last Monday's post conference session on future possibilities for Rotary and our club engendered a great deal of discussion. Obviously we will need more time to explore the issues. We will aim to follow up on the ideas presented from conference and aired during the discussion.

Note: President John will be back with us at lunch on Monday 12 April.
She was a foreign correspondent for the Washington Post between 2014 and 2020, serving as bureau chief in Beijing and Tokyo, having previously worked for the Financial Times for 13 years, reporting from countries including Iran, Syria, North Korea and the United States.

She has recently returned to Wellington where she has taken her current role as Editor of the Dominion Post.

Anna will be speaking to us about the business, trends and the what makes the news tick.

The speaker was:
A selection from the recent 9940 conference - Mark Huddlestone, on Zoom from Australia & Gillian Jones reporting on ideas coming out from a conference panel on membership. Huddlestone focused on Rotary's obsession with meetings. His research shows that Service must be central to Rotary, with everything else such as meetings and common Rotary habits, should only remain if they are relevant to Service. Here's a link to Mark's very interesting and practical presentation

Do you have some spare storage and working space?

Helen Hancox is planning the archiving our records, including sending documents to the Alexander Turnbull Library. We need a dry place to sort ten storage boxes, then Helen will need a place to work on them for about a week. The boxes can be stacked atop one another. Anyone got such a spot - either in a dry garage or office space?
End Polio Now
The goal of global eradication is getting ever closer. Deepak Kapur, the Chairman of the Rotary International's India National PolioPlus Committee, has been at the helm of the campaign since 2002. In his video he tells District 9940 an optimistic story as he talks of the challenges faced and subsequent success in eradicating Polio from India. If you missed this interesting 9940 Conference presentation, here's the link.

Centenary Snippet - The moral character of young men in 1924

On 2 September, 1924, RCW was meeting at its new room at the Kirkcaldie & Stains Building. Mr J Longuet addressed the club. He talked about the club's focus on helping boys who were not as fortunately placed as those present that day. He said that many boys had the idea that a successful career meant the making of money, but that was a false idea. ‘They should make as much money as would keep them from worrying and would enable them to do good for their fellows.’
Please ensure that if you can't do your duty, that you find someone to replace you.
