Serving BC Since 1991

April 2021
Message From Matthew:

Welcome to Republic Services!

Republic Services has developed great long-term relationships in British Columbia — and our vision is to continue to build on our success as a preferred waste management partner around the province. Using our low carbon waste-by-rail system to deliver residual solid waste to the Roosevelt Regional Landfill and RNG facility in Washington State, we provide reliable and responsible disposal services to our customers. And because good waste management plays such an important part in the health and values of every community we serve, I’m pleased to send you this update about the efforts we’re making  to do our part — I hope it will become your ‘go to’ for waste management news, insights and industry observations.

Yesterday’s Waste Leads to Tomorrow’s Energy

RNG Gas Capture at Roosevelt Regional Landfill

Republic Services’ landfills aren’t just collecting trash, they can also produce renewable energy. One type of gas-collection project started at Roosevelt Regional Landfill in 2018 involves converting captured landfill gas into Renewable Natural Gas (RNG). RNG can be used to fuel natural gas vehicle fleets. RNG has the lowest carbon intensity of all available transportation fuels. The lower the intensity, the “cleaner” the fuel. Using RNG reduces vehicle emissions by 70 percent. RNG collection is just one of many technological innovations that Republic has developed to help protect our Blue Planet®.

COVID-19 Update:

Republic Services provides an essential service to our customers in British Columbia. We continue to closely monitor the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic to make sure we’re doing the right thing for the communities we serve. This includes continuing to work closely with public health experts and other advisors, following guidelines from the British Columbia Health Authority, and adhering to BC Environmental Protection & Sustainability guidelines regarding the safe handling of municipal solid waste.

PINCH POINT

How Republic Services Helped Remote Coastal First Nations in British Columbia Solve their Waste Disposal Challenge

By the mid-2000s, remote First Nations in northern British Columbia situated along narrow coast lines, had run out of local landfill space and could only open burn. The communities started recycling and composting systems, but regional landfill options for residual waste was scarce. The option to back-haul trailers on the fuel barge to Vancouver and then onwards by rail to Republic Services Landfill in Washington State solved a pressing problem for Heiltsuk (Bella Bella), Kitasoo (Klemtu), Gitga’at (Hartley Bay) and Gitxaala (Kitkatla). In the words of Leo Lawson (Heiltsuk Tribal Council), Republic Services “provided us service when we desperately needed it”, a sentiment echoed with gratitude by all 4 communities.

Policy Place

Organics

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy has completed the second round of receiving applications for municipal organics infrastructure and collection funding. Most BC communities are turning to curbside collection of organics and several communities have Indigenous owned and operated organics processing plants. It’s great news for community gardens, CO2 emission reduction and elongating landfills’ lifespan.

Legal Decision

The Supreme Court has found in Wastech Services Ltd. v. Greater Vancouver Sewerage and Drainage District, that Metro Vancouver did not abuse its discretionary contractual powers and did not breech its duty of good faith. The ruling is good news for the business community to have clarification on contractual good faith performance. “It is important for businesses, because it puts limits on what good faith requires of each party to a contract,” writes the Globe and Mail:  Supreme Court ruling narrows the duty of good faith in contracts - The Globe and Mail
