TAIAO:  Ka pū te ruha, ka hao te rangatahi

At the end of January the taiao unit of Trust started a new monitoring programme with the assistance of Greater Wellington Regional Council scientist Alton Perrie. The date that this took place coincided with the hui rangatahi wananga and gave the taiao unit an opportunity to share with our rangatahi how we are acting as kaitiaki within our rohe and the work we do within the unit. This was a valuable experience as it gave us an opportunity to teach the next generation how we manage the awa and the importance of our mahi.

The monitoring programme that we have just begun is looking at the dissolved oxygen levels in the Waikanae and the temperature of the water. This is important to monitor as if the dissolved oxygen levels become very low then our taonga ika and other native species are placed under stress and cannot get the oxygen they need and die as a result. The taiao unit is looking at these levels to understand how the dissolved oxygen concentrations change during summer and the impact that this has on the ecosystem. Once we have conclusive data on this issue we will be able to tackle the problem and restore the mauri to a high degree within our awa.

The rangatahi had lots of questions for Alton about the awa and he was able to answer all of them to some extent which proved a valuable experience for all those involved. We saw this as an important opportunity to show them what they could be a part of in the future, there were many eager young kaitiaki amongst the bunch which we hope to see in our taiao unit in the future.
