2021 President's Letter

Hello fellow SPGC members and subscribers!

Well, we’ve made it to the end of March. I hope everyone has had a safe and healthy winter and is looking forward to another great golf season!
I’m delighted to report that Mike Gascho will be back with us again as Director of Golf Course Operations, as will Jim Myerscough as Greens Superintendent. We’ve just received the auditor’s report for 2020 and as expected it proved to be a very successful year for the Club in a difficult time for many. Our increased revenues last year and successful irrigation system project combined with Mike & Jim’s management of expenses has allowed us to restore our Club reserves with a little extra for additional club enhancements moving forward.

The Board met late last year to work on developing a strategy for the Club to prioritize the various projects that have been on our wish list. We agreed on 3 strategic goals for the future:

  1. The most beautiful, historic nine hole course in the Kawarthas
  2. Fresh, delicious food in a relaxed setting on the picturesque shores of Sturgeon Lake
  3. Wide range of lessons for the beginner to advanced player in a private or group setting from a PGA of Canada Class A professional

The first and third goals should be no surprise. But we do need to continue to focus on them as we consider new projects at the course. The second goal may be surprising. It speaks to the need to provide more than just a golf experience at the course, to continue to attract new members and pay-as-you-play guests.

COVID-19 protocols will continue to dictate how we operate the course as we start a new season. Members and guests must respect the guidance that Mike and his staff provide.

Thank you for your continued support of Sturgeon Point Golf Club.  The weather man is predicting a warmer than normal spring, so we are hopeful for an early opening. As always, please encourage your friends and family to come out and enjoy our wonderful facility.
See you on the course!!

On behalf of the Board of Directors,
Bill Baker, President

Director of Golf Operations

I'm so happy to be back at Sturgeon for another great golf season. I'm looking forward to seeing our returning friends out on the course soon, and I'd like to extend a warm welcome to our new members and subscribers.

Jim and I are working hard to get the course open for all you early birds, but with ice still on the late it'll take a little while longer. Stay tuned! We'll all be out on the links in no time.

The second instalment of early-bird memberships will be processed on Wednesday March 31st. We are continuing to accept memberships, which can be submitted by email to mike@sturgeonpointgolf.com or by phoning the club at 705-887-3144.

Last summer we took on the challenge of modifying our operations to comply with COVID-19 infection prevention protocols. We really appreciate everybody doing their part to stop the spread and we expect the 2021 season will look very similar. COVID-19 protocols will remain in place, however, this year we endeavour to open club storage to a limited number of players so please call the club if you want to reserve a spot. We are also adding more dividers to golf carts to try and accommodate more riders.

Speaking of golf carts, we're adding 4 more to our fleet!

I'd like to give a big shout-out to Srixon for supplying us with a full fitting kit so if you're looking to treat yourself or someone else to a new set of clubs, we can fully customize a set to maximize performance and comfort. Just find me at the club and ask me how to get started.

Last but not least, I'm thrilled to be welcoming Liz Wallis to our Pro Shop team. Liz will be joining returning champion Victoria Heacock, and myself, in serving our guests from the breezeway. In addition to Victoria, Brandon McMurray will also be returning as our Junior Instructor. You'll also be seeing Wayne Timbers and Brian Ward back with Superintendent Jim Myerscough as our top notch Greens Crew, keeping the course in spectacular condition.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

~ Mike Gascho
We are deeply saddened to have lost 2 of our cherished friends over the past month. These fine folks were some of the kindest, brightest lights around our community and we will miss them dearly.
Hugh Graham
1942 - 2021

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Hugh Graham of Fenelon Falls, Ontario at Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay, Ontario. Hugh was a man of honour, courage and strength. He never gave up hope while fighting cancer for twenty five years, including Waldenstrom’s and finally prostate cancer. His smile, sense of humour, kindness and generosity enriched the lives of all who knew and loved him. He will be dearly missed around the club and beyond.
Babe Roberts
1928 - 2021

Elizabeth (‘Babe’) Roberts was a pillar of the Village of Sturgeon Point and a cherished member of Sturgeon Point Golf Club. Babe passed this March at the age of 92. She was such a special part of our community.

We send our sympathy to the Roberts family, to Babe’s friends and neighbours, and to all who loved her. She will be missed by so many.
