New Wine

The Institute for the Theology of Culture: New Wine, New Wineskins of Multnomah Biblical Seminary at Multnomah University. New Wine seeks to bear witness to Christ in contemporary culture by partnering with the church to live incarnationally in the communities in which we are placed and beyond.

Gender conference

What does it mean to be a man? What does it mean to be a woman? Does it even matter? How do these questions bear upon topics such as how we work together in society at large and the church in ways that affirm and promote us in all that God has created us to do? It is so important to seek clarity with civility in pursuit of biblical unity, diversity, and honor in a culture where our beauty as God's human creation is so often endangered by phyiscal, emotional, ans spiritual abuse. We will approach gender identity from a variety of angles in a biblically integrated and in a culturally meaningful manner.

Save the date! New Wine will be hosting this conference on Saturday, March 3. Speakers include Steve and Celestia Tracy, and Multnomah faculty Valerie Clemen, Barbara Feil, Paul Louis Metzger, and Brad Harper.

2012 banquet

Mark your calendar for Thursday, April 19. New Wine will be hosting our annual banquet at the Oregon Zoo. Our keynote speaker will be Mr. David Austin of Mercy Corps. This is a great opportunity to hear about the vision and passion of New Wine, talk with other New Wine supporters, and consider the many ways you can partner with New Wine to bear witness to Christ in contemporary culture. Email newwine@multnomah.edu for more information.

The John 17:23 Network

The aim of The John 17:23 Network is to encourage, exhort, and equip the multi-ethnic Body of Christ in the greater Portland area to fulfill Jesus' prayer that we might all be one. The Network exists in partnership with New Wine and local churches including Central Bible Church, Trinity Full Gospel Pentecostal Church, Cedar Mill Bible Church, St. Johns All Nations Church of God in Christ, Tigard Covenant Church, Imago Dei Community, Daniels Memorial Church of God in Christ, and other local churches. Regular gatherings are held every second Sunday of the month at rotating locations in the Portland area. To receive more information about gatherings, email newwine@multnomah.edu.

Partnership with New Hope Christian College

This year, New Wine of Multnomah Biblical Seminary at Multnomah University signed a Memo of Understanding with New Hope Christian College in Honolulu, Hawaii. We at New Wine look forward to building this partnership on behalf of Multnomah with our friends in the Pacific Rim. The partnership will focus on global theology of culture.

Grant received

New Wine received a grant from The Association of Theological Schools to help our graduates prepare for effective ministry as Evangelicals in a multi-faith society today. The results of this work will be particularly relevant to pastors, chaplains, and Christians in the marketplace as they work among increasingly diverse populations.

Student retreat

The New Wine community of Multnomah University students take two retreats per year. Their 2012 winter retreat will be held January 27 - 29 in Sisters, OR. Please be in prayer for a time of community-building around the New Wine values.

Faculty Committee

New Wine recently welcomed Dr. Derek Chinn and Prof. Kristen Hubert as new New Wine Faculty Committee members. They join Dr. Robert Redman, Dr. Paul Metzger, Dr. Brad Harper, Dr. Albert Baylis, and Dr. Jon Robertson.

THE JUSTICE CONFERENCE

Dr. Paul Louis Metzger, on behalf of New Wine, will moderate a pre-conference panel discussion entitled "Justice, Race, Gentrification, and the Land" at The Justice Conference on February 24. It will involve leaders of diverse ethnic perspectives addressing the subject of justice as it relates to the complex realities of gentrification and urban renewal. Attention will also be given to concerns over land use and rights. For more information and to register, click here. See also Dr. Metzger's "This Is Our City" article above and this essay for a further engagement of these themes.

THE TABLE

On November 22 in San Francisco New Wine and Greater Life Church hosted an event called The Table: A Forum on Fatherlessness. The gathering of community, church, and civic leaders explored how fatherlessness impacts issues such as gang violence in our society.
