Rehabilitation Research News: April 2, 2021

From the Director's Desk

Welcome to spring, everyone! We’ve got a lot in this issue, so I’ll jump right to it.

I wanted to share a recent publication by the U.S. Census Bureau describing the rates and patterns of childhood disability in the United States from 2008 to 2019. Overall, the rates of disability have increased from 3.9% in 2008 to 4.3% in 2019 and differ by ethnic group, poverty status, immigration status, and region. Please see the full brief, Childhood Disability in the United States: 2019, for more details.

I would also encourage you to check out the COVID-19 Return to School for Children with Disabilities External Web Site Policy resource developed by the Washington University Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center and the Special School District of St. Louis County, Missouri, with NICHD funding.

The next meeting of the National Advisory Board on Medical Rehabilitation Research will be held Monday, May 3, 2021 at 10 a.m. ET and can be viewed on the NIH VideoCast.

Finally, many of you have been asking about the expiration of NICHD’s R01 FOA for clinical trials (PAR-18-480). NICHD is now participating in the Parent Announcement for R01 clinical trials (PA-20-183); see the notice below.

Workshop on Artificial Intelligence for Function, Disability, and Health

The Second Workshop on Artificial Intelligence for Function, Disability, and Health (AI4Function 2021) invites the submission of abstracts and original research papers focused on applying informatics methods, artificial intelligence (AI), or data mining techniques in the area of whole-person care, disability, and functional status information. AI4Function is a venue for researchers cutting across data science and AI methods to discuss new ways to collect and utilize functional status information within healthcare delivery, public health, and social well-being. The first AI4Function workshop brought together researchers from fields as diverse as natural language processing, in-home sensing, psychometrics, and health policy, and the goal is to continue this multidisciplinary exchange in the second iteration of the workshop. AI4Function 2021 will be held as a virtual event in August 2021. For the full call for papers and more information on the workshop, see the event website External Web Site Policy.
