Spring Break Health and Safety Reminder
As we return to buildings on Monday, April 19, please help us keep SPS school communities healthy and safe. If your child is experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms, do not send them to school. If you have traveled outside the state during spring break, we recommend you follow public health guidance and quarantine.

Return to In-Person Survey Appeals Process
Currently, families of preK-5 students, and students served in Special Education Intensive Service Pathways may request an appeal if: (1) The district made an error in assignment, or (2) Can provide evidence of an extreme or unique extenuating circumstance. For grades 6-12, families can contact their school directly for a change in learning model through April 23. After that date, families will need to file a formal appeal. More information on the appeals process is available here.

Secondary "Incomplete" Grades
If your student earned an “Incomplete” final grade during the first semester of this school year, they have until the end of the second semester to complete a learning plan to earn a letter grade and course credit. If your student has reached out to their teacher regarding a learning plan but have not received one, email ccr@seattleschools.org.

Requirement: Signed Covid Safety Form. Return electronically to mgamble@seattleschools.org, or you can print and sign to bring on your Day 1. We are being told that students cannot enter on day 1 without this form signed by a parent or guardian. Students who are 18 years of age can sign their own forms.
SPS Secondary Family Guide can be found here

Students returning to buildings on April 19 should bring their SPS-issued laptops or a personal device with them for their in-person learning session. We have instructions to help students use their personal device while in the classroom, which has also been shared with educators. Also, make sure to protect it with a backpack or laptop case. #SPSSafeReturn

Advocacy

Washington State PTA Legislative Report
All bills have now either been passed by both chambers of the state legislature (House and Senate) or are now dead for this session. One item of great news is that the bill which requires testing and remediation of lead in school drinking water (HB 1139) has passed and is now awaiting the Governor’s signature. Now that bill consideration is at an end, the legislature is focused on budgets. Now is the time for your voice to be heard if you want to reverse some of the staff cuts in our schools planned for next year, or want to see more mental health counselors in schools. For the full details on how you can take action NOW, please read the latest WSPTA Legislative Report. Please email the legislators listed in the report with the asks below. Remember to personalize your email to you and your student(s) experience and state that you are a member of Washington State PTA, the state’s largest child advocacy organization. Please tell legislators and budget writers to:
  • Fund the actual costs of transportation for the 2020-21 school year. It costs the same amount to transport 5 students as it does 50.
  • Preserve ESSER 1 and ESSER 3 federal funding for purposes related to the pandemic, not as backfill to enrollment or transportation decline.
  • Stabilize all categories of enrollment decline with combined state and federal (ESSER 2) funds so that all school districts benefit, and mid-year cuts are softened or avoided. This includes levy equalization to protect local levy collections in at least calendar year 2022.
  • Fund more school counselors to support student mental health and academic success.

How can poetry be an effective response to current events and under-reported stories? How can we use poetry to connect global issues to our local and personal contexts? Any current K-12 student in the United States or internationally may enter. Students may write in any language, and are welcome to submit multilingual poems. Cash prizes will be awarded.
