Organic materials essential for life on Earth are found for the first time on an asteroid

Research from the Department of Earth Sciences, has found water and organic matter on the surface of an asteroid sample returned from the inner Solar System. This is the first time that organic materials, which could have provided chemical precursors for the origin of life on Earth, have been found on an asteroid. Read more about the discovery here. 

StoryFutures commissioned for UK-wide festival of creativity in 2022

StoryFutures Academy run by Royal Holloway and the National Film and Television School (NFTS) has been selected as one of 10 creative teams to develop its ground-breaking project for Festival UK* 2022. The festival aims to bring people together in 2022, to showcase creativity with projects reaching every corner of the UK. Read more.

Award-winning climate change film for the younger generation

A new film has been created by academics at Royal Holloway and Dundee University, highlighting the importance of the diminishing state of the world's glaciers to the younger generation. Read the story here. 
 

Royal Holloway students volunteer to teach English to local Syrian families

 
ESOL Tutoring is a volunteering initiative, led by students at Royal Holloway, that teaches English to local Syrian families as part of a resettlement scheme. The initiative has been running for 15 years but recently, due to Covid-19 restrictions, ESOL has had to adapt to running its classes online. Find out more. 

 

Weed killers could be redesigned to save bumblebees

Weed killers, bought by many households across the country and used in agriculture, could easily be redesigned to be more bumblebee friendly by changing ingredients and therefore saving the lives of bees. Find out more. 

A new centre created to explore the rise of 'emotional politics'

A new interdisciplinary 'Centre for the Politics of Feelings' will be established in September 2021 at the University of London, in partnership between its School of Advanced Study and Royal Holloway. The centre is led by Manos Tsakiris, Professor of Psychology at Royal Holloway and aims to address how emotions and their underlying neurophysiological mechanisms shape our political beliefs and behaviours. Astronauts on Mars missions could suffer cognitive and emotional problems

Dr Elisa Ferre, Senior Lecturer from the Department of Psychology, has discovered that the lack of gravity on Mars space missions could have a negative impact on astronauts' cognitive skills and emotional understanding. Read the article in The Conversation here.

Contractor appointed for Rusham Park

Balfour Beatty has been announced as the university's preferred bidder for the development of a student village at Rusham Park in Egham. Read more.

Royal Holloway visit experiences this summer


This summer the university is holding a mixture of on-campus and online events where prospective students can find out more about studying at Royal Holloway. The on-campus Covid-secure visit experiences are taking place on 19, 20, 26 and 27 June. Booking is essential. Details of these events can be found here.
