SMCS NEWS: Welcome Back

Finishing #MonarchStrong Together

In the week after Spring Break, our students and faculty have returned with a pep in their step, our eldest Monarchs have been fitted for graduation robes and our school is filled with reminders of how blessed we are to share this space and this time together.

COMMUNITY UPDATES

Get ready to add to your family’s Art Collection! The Spring Art Show will be virtual this year, but you can still purchase a framed piece of artwork created by your student (grades K-8 only). This online show will open on Friday, April 30 and remain open for purchases through Friday, May 7.

All framed works will be sold for $26 with a portion of sales benefiting Saint Mary’s Catholic School.

Be sure to complete this form by Friday, April 30th for each of your students to ensure they receive their T-shirt in time for Field Day next month! Note there is no payment required for shirts since they are included in student fees. Faculty and staff should also complete the form to indicate their preferred size.

Please also consider donating some Field Day equipment by checking out Mrs. Robinson's needs here.

Save the date for our next Virtual Coffee on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at 9:00 AM. Parents, watch your inbox early next week for an invitation and link from Mr. Hess. Hope to see you there!
THIS WEEK'S AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT FROM MRS. LAVALLEE

In Memory of Beverly Cleary

"Before Spring Break, SMCS 3rd and 4th graders wrote beautiful sympathy cards to Beverly Cleary's family, following her recent death. I sent the cards off to her publisher last week, but there was so much creativity and kindness in the cards, I just wanted to share a few pictures here. We have such empathetic and kind-hearted kids!"

Find some of Cleary's beloved titles at the SMCS Library.

PTO NEWS & EVENTS

Thanks so much to everyone for your participation in our PTO's March Madness Bracket Challenge! We had over 150 students, faculty, staff and parents submit brackets.

What a crazy March it was! A big congratulations to our Bracket winners--Gift cards will be awarded to our winners in the coming week!

Although the PTO will be unable to host an in-person gala this year, we are very excited to offer a Virtual Auction on Saturday, May 8!

The online auction will feature themed baskets provided by each class.  We will also be auctioning off adorable art projects made by our ECDC students and a 2nd grade favorite, a rosary made by the students!  Other items to look forward to include a TAG WEEK that parents may purchase for each student, reserved Christmas Eve Mass seating, a Teachers’ Lounge Takeover, lunch in the School Garden and so much more!

The PTO has made the decision not to solicit already struggling small businesses this year, but if you have a business and would like to donate any products/services, please reach out to our auction chair Elizabeth Singleton no later than April 21.

Please start considering if you or someone you know would be interested in joining our PTO Board next year. We will be announcing our acceptance of nominations for the open positions of Secretary, Treasurer and Vice President in the coming weeks. Elections will be held in May. Stay tuned for more information!

BY THE NUMBERS: ONE COMMUNITY

Parishioners supporting our School, Families

Georgeann Schmied is a Richmond native who’s been a member of St. Mary’s Parish for more than 30 years. Since the middle of 2018, Georgeann has made a weekly gift to Saint Mary’s Catholic School’s Go Forth! Capital Campaign, which supports the recent renovation of a large part of our school. She will complete her pledge by the end of the 2020-21 school year.

Another campaign to support our school and its families who are in need of financial assistance, is called Future Full of Hope. You may have seen recent ads in the St. Mary's Church bulletin highlighting the 44% funding gap that currently exists between financial aid requests and financial assistance granted. The great news? A very generous anonymous donor will match all gifts to this scholarship fund up to $100,000 in order to help us better meet the needs of all families who request support.

82 out of 411 students received some sort of need-based financial assistance this school year totaling nearly half a million dollars in aid. COVID-19 has had a great impact on requests for need. The Diocese's deadline for Financial Aid applications for the next school year is June 1.
