The symmetry of the West Pier
Photograph of the West Pier, undated but taken shortly after the pier’s 1866 opening. The image illustrates brilliantly both the symmetry of the West Pier and how it performed as a select and privatised extension to the seafront promenade reaching out over the sea. On its opening the West Pier was the most modern and innovative promenade pier in Britain; the use of decorative or ornamental cast iron was impressive.
