Advanced C420 Clinic @ SDYC
Three of our more experienced C420 teams headed over to SDYC for the weekend of April 17th for this intense training experience led by Coach Steve Hunt with 22 teams from as far North as Santa Barbara. These teams are all preparing for the upcoming SCYYRA C420 Perry Championships/US Sailing Doublehanded Bemis Championships Qualifier at Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club in San Pedro where competition will be fierce and conditions challenging. Sailing took place in the ocean both days with long hours on the water. Not only did our sailors need to have their boats well prepared, but gear, food and water are ever more important for big events like this. Sunday's racing saw breeze well into the teens and puffs up to 28 knots were reported during the WILD sail back to the docks! Two of our three teams finished up the regatta part of the clinic in the top 9 overall and ALL three teams have loads more experience, on many levels, under their belts as they head into bigger events now showing up on the calendar. Our sailors will continue their training efforts this coming weekend at home before they pack up the trailers for San Pedro, May 15-16.
Good luck to all our teams and sailors going to the Perry Champs: Cole/Shea, Shane/Efe, Owen/Allie, Paige/Carlin, Kaden/Alex and Oakley.

2021 MBYC Spring Screaming Chickens!!!

The first of MBYC's Spring Screaming Chickens took place Sunday, April 18th. We had beautiful breeze for 6 races in Chicken Cove. A big congratulations to our newest Team MBYC sabot racer, Phoebe! Always smiling and wonderfully coachable, Phoebe improved with every race throughout the afternoon and we're excited to see what's next for this enthusiastic sailor.

Other highlights from the race day:

  • Sealing the deal for the move to C1 Fleet, Isabella won C2's, the largest fleet of the regatta with 20 boats!
  • Other MBYC sailors in the top 5 in C2 were Clare in 3rd and Christopher in 4th!
  • In the C3's, Alex K won the tiebreaker for 1st, his second one-day win, therefore moving him to C2 Fleet!
  • Also in the 12 boat C3 Fleet, Simon finished 3rd and Parker 4th overall. Go Team MBYC!!

Coach's Notes from the CFJ Clinic at SWYC
We were stoked to send 8 sailors to the CFJ Clinic hosted by SWYC on Saturday, April 24th. Liam/Carlin, Owen/Sean, Jonah/Alex K, Isabella and Efe got to practice their boathandling and spinnaker skills in preparation for the upcoming SCYYRA CFJ Shadden Championships at the beginning of June. It's great to work with area clubs in providing these opportunities for the kids, not only to learn more, but to get to know each other more as they visit other  clubs and share experiences in non-regatta settings. We are especially proud of our newer CFJ sailors Sean, Jonah, Alex K and Isabella for stepping outside of their comfort zones and trying something new!
From SWYC Coach Marianna - "This weekend's clinic went great. It was a wonderful day for both advanced and new FJ sailors. As the fleet had sailors of all walks of FJ experience, it was split into those who would learn how to set a spinnaker and the advanced sailors. The beginning FJ sailors had a great time learning how to set kites, and the advanced sailors focused on technique. After a chalk talk and some land drills, the sailors hit the water! We had a couple of successful sets in the beginning fleet but the wind was a little too much for our new spinnaker sailors, so they learned how wing on wind while going down wind. We then finished up the day with two joint races with the advanced group. I’m very proud of my group of sailors, some of which had never been in an FJ before! We’re ready for the next clinic!"
Next clinic is May 15, last clinic of the series is May 22!
MBYC Spring O'Pen Skiff Invite

We were thrilled to have 24 boats on the line for the O'Pen Skiff Invite #1 at MBYC this past weekend. Not only were we excited to see some new faces pop into the top of the fleet, we were especially proud of our newest O'Pen Skiff racers: Clare, Alex K, Braden and Alexander. Transitioning from a Sabot to an O'Pen Skiff is tricky and our sailors showed determination and resilience as they made their way around the course. We ran 6 races with one throwout. O'Pen Skiff veteran, Owen, won the day, but we were especially excited for Sean who broke into the top 5 overall! You'll be seeing our sailors working hard over the next few months as we hear O'Pen Skiff Nationals may be hosted by MBYC in late August of THIS SUMMER!!
