An Inspiring Finish of Term One at Gurukula
____________________________

Dear Parents, Students and our Gurukula Community,

On behalf of the school staff, I would like to thank everyone for your support and participation in the life of our school in Term One and congratulate and recognise all of our students' achievements and progress during this term.

Despite the interruptions caused by floods, all classes were able to complete their learning projects and demonstrated a high quality work. Primary students' literacy diagnostics (DIBELS through the University of Oregon) revealed a very strong progress in reading, writing, spelling and comprehension for all our children. Similarly, high school students confidently presented their first term learning during the Knowledge Fest at the end of the term. Very impressive work! Well done!

We are looking forward for an exciting and learning-rich second term of the year. Our value focus for next term is 'truthfulness and integrity'.

Vinod Bihari Das
School Principal

JAGANNATHA CLASSROM
Pre-K & Kindergarten

The Jagannatha class finished the term with a bang!

On the Pre-K students’ last day, we organised a cooking day. The students made fruit kebabs for crunch and sip, we had popcorn and veggie stick with hummus for recess and last but not least we cooked pizzas for lunch. The children had a fantastic day and enjoyed the cooking activities very much. I would like to thank all the parents for sending in fruits, vegetables and the hummus! A special thanks to Radha Ikrath (Mirabai’s grandma) for helping with the cooking of the pizzas which was a grand effort!

On the last day of school, the kindergarten students along with the 1-2 class went to Macadamia Castle for a fun and educational excursion. The day was a great way to finish the term!

GAURA NITAI CLASSROM
Years 1-2
After the rain and flood, grades 1 and 2 resumed and continued their learning. Within a variety of activities, students demonstrated their understanding of 'Past and Present Families'. In the last week, we tied in fun and science during our excursion to Macadamia Castle, where the students had the opportunity to interact with some animals, learning about their features and needs. They were able to apply some of their knowledge gained in the classroom to an organised presentation by answering and asking questions. Their singing and bhajan practice culminated in a presentation on Gaura Purnima Day where they sang 'Sri Krsna Caitanya Prabhu doya karo more' bhajan fo the pleasure of Their Lordships.

RADHA KRSNA CLASSROOM
Years 5-6

Wow! This first term flew by!  The students are well and truly settled and it has been a privilege to watch them develop in confidence and learning over the term.

In visual arts, the students have finished their final landscape piece.  They used the techniques they had learnt about and experimented with, during their earlier watercolour lessons, to create their own landscape painting of the amazing view from the school dining area.  They worked like explorers in the 1800s capturing the Australian scenery and we were pleased with how well they were able to communicate their observations to their audience. Next term, the focus for the arts will be drama.

To celebrate the end of a successful term the class joined the Krishna Balarama class for a fun-filled adventure at Bounce.

Celebrating Our Learning
End of Term One Knowledge Fair
Gurukula High and Senior School

At the end of Term One, our high school students proudly presented their learning projects to the school community. The end-of-term knowledge sharing fair enables our students to demonstrate and share their learning at the school. Such fairs will take place at the end of Term One and at the end of Term Three. At the end of the other two terms, our students will create an expo of their learning that will be presented to the parents as a student-run excursion during the Parent-Student-Teacher conferences.

The knowledge sharing day this term was a success. Congratulations and Well Done to all our high schoolers! The Fair once again finished with the ecstatic kirtan and prasadam at the temple.

Madhavendu presents his business proposal.

High School History Classes
Stage 5 History

In Term 1, students explored the historical forces and factors that led to the Industrial Revolution and how this shaped the modern world and Australia. Each week students completed a personal journal entry from the point of view of someone who actually lived during the period of the Industrial Revolution. This unit of work culminated in the students compiling their journal entries into impressive hardbound copies which they made themselves from start to finish (add photos taken from the Education Fair of student journals).

For this upcoming term, students will investigate the historical events surrounding the rights and freedoms of Indigenous Australians. In this unit, students will review a number of movies and documentaries and complete a case study on the significance of one major civil rights event for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Stage 4 History

Last term our class took a journey into ancient China and explored the three major philosophical beliefs (Daoism, Confucianism and Buddhism) as well as a number of their health and longevity practices (Qigong, Tàijí quán, Chinese martial arts, and Traditional Chinese Medicine). This term takes us into ancient Greece where students will investigate the structure of ancient Greek society and write a comparative study between ancient Greece and our modern civilization.
