Album Review: Crossing to Ireland EP

A brand new, Extended Play collection, Crossing to Ireland, was recently released by Scottish Trad band The Fire, and we were lucky enough to get a copy.

This EP consists of four tracks from the band's Live Stream concert on Saint Patrick's Day, March 17th, 2021, and takes its name from the 2nd track.

Despite the pandemic, the United Irish Cultural Center has successfully operated a large event facility near the Zoo in San Francisco, serving the Irish and other Cultural communities, in the Sunset District of San Francisco. Thanks to our hard working small staff and dozens of volunteers, the UICC Wawona Gates Outdoor Dining has operated a bustling outdoor dining space under a 1,800 square foot open-sided canopy since January 2021.

And now, thanks to the just announced reductions in related restrictions, the UICC is also offering limited indoor dining in their spacious Saint Patrick's Room!

A folk music 'landmark' on the historic ships at Hyde Street Pier, this 39-year San Francisco singing tradition continues in the virtual realm, hosting singers from across the Bay Area – and the country - and now all around planet Earth!

Amidst all the chaos going on around us, we still have the monthly virtual chantey sing to help bring joy, calm the nerves, and help us get through these trying times. The next one is on Saturday, April 17th, Noon to 2:15 PM Pacific time, USA, around 8pm in London and 9pm in Paris.

Lead singers will receive a separate link in another email. Since the sings have gone virtual, they have gone international. Whelan Master Session #22: A World of Song

Since March 2020, John has stepped up his online activities, and his latest project is Master Sessions with John Whelan. This edition of Whelan Master Sessions features an all singing program.

John says:
Saturday, something very special is happening that I am very excited about. Four of my friends are coming together for the very first Whelan Master Singing Session. Niamh Parsons and Catherine Jordan I have known most of my life and Clare Horgan and Geneviève Galarneau are relative newcomers to my life but equally as important in both friendship and contribution to the joy they give me when they sing.

This was an easy decision for me to make but a fearful one as I am not really a part of the vast signing community so I ask that those of you who love singing in the Irish Tradition English and Irish please help spread the word. You will have a front row seat like never before and get to hear the stories behind the songs but also get to know these artists in a warm friendly and very comfortable setting.

A native of Scramogue in Co. Roscommon, Cathy Jordan's love for traditional singing was instilled at an early age, and she began singing publicly at all kind of Feiseanna and concerts as a child. In later years she took to performing a wide range of material as a solo performer throughout the midlands. In the summer of 1990, Cathy was asked to join the band Dervish. For more than 30 years now she has toured the world as the band's charismatic and unforgettable front woman, lead singer, and bodhran player.

From a bilingual childhood steeped in the Irish language, song and dance of her native Uíbh Ráthach in Ciarraí, the first music that Clare Horgan heard was traditional and the first songs were sean-nós. As a small child Clare performed alongside much older masters, the local songs naturally seeping into her bones. She reached National level at Fleadh Cheoil at the age of 11. Her adulthood saw her explore more modern musical genres when she took a post-graduate diploma in Jazz in Leeds, West Yorkshire, leading her to live and perform in Belfast, London, Paris and Beirut. But it was always the songs and stories of her childhood to which she returned.

Often described as one of the most distinctive voices in Irish music, Niamh Parsons has collected her repertoire of songs from a wide variety of sources, both traditional and modern. As a member of the traditional Irish band Arcady (led by De Dannan's Johnny 'Ringo' McDonagh), Niamh sang on their Shanachie/Dara recording Many Happy Returns. She has appeared at nearly every prestigious folk festival on either side of the Atlantic, and regularly performs as a duet with guitarist Graham Dunne, collaborating to bring out the purest essence of the songs.

A resident of the Pacific Northwest, Genevieve Galarneau holds a master's degree in folklore and ethnomusicology, with a particular focus on Ulster songs and Donegal regional singing. She has visited the Gaeltacht of Gleann Cholm Cille as part of an Ulster-Irish intensive course, works as volunteer staff at the well-regarded Sean-Nós Northwest festival in Washington state, and has learned from stalwarts of the sean-nós tradition including Dr. Lillis Ó Laoire, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, Gearoidín Breathnach, Celia Ní Fhártharta, Brian Ó Domhnaill, Máirín Uí Chéide, Thomas McCarthy, and Saileog Ní Cheannabháin.

Seven-time All-Ireland Button Accordion Champion John Whelan is one of the world's best living Irish button accordion players. John was raised in the vibrant London Irish music scene of the 1970s, and learned his craft from such legends as Lucy Farr, Roger Sherlock, Paddy Taylor, Mick O Connor and his teacher Brendan Mulkaire. Along with his All-Ireland Championships, he was twice awarded musician of the year from the Irish Music Association. He has over 15 CDs and has performed on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. John's music has been featured on such TV shows as 'Sex in the City,' 'History's Mysteries' and 'History Detective.' John performs with the John Whelan Band and has also teamed up with his old pal Brian Conway forming the group Gailfean, which also features Máirtin De Cógáin and Don Penzien have released their first new CD. For those who don't remember, I even made a 'gig flyer' as used to be used by musicians to advertise live music performances, but this AmeriCeltic thing wants to do this their own way.

Husick's Taphouse is located just past the Old Sugar Mill, as a beer and bbq oasis in a sea of great wine. Initially opened in 2013 replacing the previous country store, like other such businesses, Husick's was closed down by the pandemic restrictions.

Dance Teacher Michael Dillon is offering the Two Hands of Ireland, a six week dance course for limited number of couples, with fixed partnerships, all for only $75.

At the Michael Dillon School of Irish dancing, we take pride in offering one of the most forward-thinking and comprehensive Irish dance programs in America. We have been at the forefront of online classes and welcome students from around the globe.

Scotland's Approach to Climate Change

The threat of climate change affects the globe. Scotland is working hard to protect its country, and the planet and people to ensure a greener, more sustainable future for everyone. On this Earth Day, the Saint Andrew's Society of San Francisco is proud to present leading Scottish experts working to solve this challenge!

Gavin Tweedie, the Chairman of the Scottish NetZero Community will share the plan for Scotland, and how the country has taken substantial measures to lead the global charge. Indeed, Scotland will be hosting the UN Climate Change Conference COP26, bringing together world leaders to create action for the global environmental crisis.

James Napier, the founder of CBN Network will also speak about what it means to be net-zero and carbon free.

Many people in Scotland are already focused on climate change, from engineers working on offshore wind farms, to local efforts that highlight education and help the next generation understand how they too can help.

Gavin will provide an overview to some of the most important initiatives and share how you can also be involved.

Spring Session

Community Music School of Santa Cruz is once again hosting a weekend of online Celtic music workshops as part of our Redwood Online Music Camp series. 'Spring Session' will take place April 24th and 25th, and includes classes for fiddle, guitar, whistle, harp, Irish tenor banjo, bodhran, and voice. Joining regular faculty Jesse Autumn, David Brewer, Adam Hendey, Rebecca Lomnicky, and John Weed will be Janet Herman (Irish tenor banjo, mandolin) and vocalist Eilis Kennedy from Ireland (voice).

April Verch
Fiddle Workshop

There are many regional styles of fiddling in Canada including Ottawa Valley, Western Canadian, Métis, Maritime, Cape Breton and French Canadian. April Verch will be choosing 2 tunes to teach, that represent 2 of these regions. Instruction will be 'by ear' where April will break the tunes down slowly into small, repeatable sections.

April will show how to take the tunes and build them from the basic melody into your own version of the tunes by implementing left hand ornamentation and bowing techniques. These “tools” will be useful for you to apply to other tunes you play as well. She is mindful of keeping with the roots of this tradition – getting together to make music and have a great time in a relaxed, social environment!

For over two decades, fiddler, singer, songwriter and step dancer April Verch has been recording and captivating listeners worldwide. The Ottawa Valley native has garnered praise from music's heavy hitters including NPR, Rolling Stone, No Depression and more, for her fresh and feisty approach to deep North Americana. Verch's signature sound blends together regional Canadian, American old-time, classic country and more, resulting in a well-rounded tour-de-force of traditional sounds.

On stage is where her diverse repertoire comes to life, with a presence that is versatile, robust, and masterfully executed. Her delicate voice, energetic footwork and stunning playing have brought her to stages across the globe, wowing audiences with her jaw-dropping performance. With 13 albums and over two decades of touring under her belt, she is a seasoned veteran.

Verch won't be the one to tell you about her championship titles, nominations, and awards, or the fact that she was one of 6 fiddlers who represented the Canadian fiddle tradition to the world at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, as part of a segment called 'Fiddle Nation'. Instead, in speaking with her, you'll hear about how passionate she is about sharing her music; in small gatherings in remote communities in Iqaluit, to large prestigious concert halls like Mozartsal in Vienna.

Verch's ability to preserve the authentic folk traditions of the past and reintroduce them into the musical landscape of the present is a testament to her masterful musicianship and widespread appeal.

On July 24, 2020 April Verch released a new album, Top of the Hill , made for children & for the young at heart! April has also released a video, I Want to Help (an April Verch original) of one of ten tracks from Top of the Hill

Building on the recent popular class taught at Redwood Music Camp Online, David Brewer is offering a three part master class over Zoom for people interested in developing their knowledge and craft of Celtic-style melody composition.

During these upbeat sessions, David will guide you through every form of Celtic melody, from jigs and reels to hornpipes and pipe marches, dissecting traditional tunes to highlight what makes them tick. With over two decades of experience and hundreds of original tunes to his name, David offers a deep dive into his compositional thought process, as well as tips and tricks for crafting your own melodies.  

Open to musicians and non-musicians of all levels.
