President Silvio writes. . .
Dear Fellow Rotarians and Friends,
We have had a busy time since our last News Letter with lots of planning taking place for the next Red Shield Appeal taking place from May 24 and May 30, 2021. Also busy with the planning of our major annual fund raiser, the Lane Cove Rotary Fair, to be held on Sunday 10 October, 2021 in conjunction with the Lane Cove Council. It will be very exciting to be able to stage the Fair again after last years cancellation due to COVID.
Overview of Lane Cove Rotary Fair, this year also expanding into The Canopy
Gillian Thomas OAM, President of Polio NSW and Polio Australia was our speaker this week. Gillian gave an inspiring and informative talk on her own suffering from polio and about polio generally, in Australia and world-wide. Gillian contracted polio in 1950 as a baby. This resulted in both her legs and one arm being paralysed – nevertheless, she learnt to walk with the aid of callipers and had a mainstream education. With the onset of the late effects of polio some 40 years ago, her “good” right arm had become increasingly weak while her mobility had also considerably decreased.

She has been honoured by receiving a number of awards in recognition of her work for polio survivors over a period of over 30 year. In 2020 she was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for service to community health, particularly to people with polio.
PP Roger Wescombe graciously thanked Gillian for her most informative talk to the meeting on the subject of polio and immunisation, especially during world Immunization week.

Anzac Day Service at The Canopy, Lane Cove
We wish to thank Past President Jenny May for representing the Lane Cove Rotary Club on Anzac Day, Sunday 25 April and laying a wreath from the club to help us remember those who gave their lives. Thank you Jenny.
Get ready to volunteer for Red Shield Appeal, 24 to 30 May, 2021
There will be no actual  'door-knocking' this year with  stationary collection points only.  We will be looking for volunteers to man stations each day between the hours of 8am to 4 pm (with some variations). Community service director Patty Wilson-Cust will be 'knocking on members doors' for volunteers very soon.
Our first of 3 recycled plastic benches installed at York's Corner.
Lane Cove Rotary supporting to save the environment! These benches come unassembled from the manufacturer in Melbourne.  Each bench saves approximately 21,250 pieces of plastic from the environment and 0.28 cubic meters of landfill. Pictured installing the bench are Rotarian Craig Brodey and President Silvio.
The very first users were neighbours of Rotarian Dick Dawes, Chris and John Briggs with their grandchildren, - all very with the end product happy! (Permission given to publish photo).
Our intrepid member Craig Brodey with Rotary Club of
Toronto NSW member Kim Henley busy planning a classic car display.

Toronto Rotary are working on displaying no fewer than 75 classic cars at the first Lake Macquarie Autumn Fair on Saturday, 1 May, 2021 at Spears Point Park, Lake Macquarie.
They will have games, animals, music, dancing and wait for it 'a Toilet Paper Toss'. Appears that there will be a lot of fun and entertainment. Just maybe Craig will bring back a few ideas for our Lane Cover Rotary Fair on Sunday, 10 October, 2021?
