Restoration

Streetsboro Cemetery is getting a long-awaited cleanup

The Streetsboro Cemetery has long been falling into disrepair. Last year, VFW Post 9716 approached city council about spearheading a restoration.

"There are veterans over there that deserve to have a headstone standing up proud," said Post 9716 Commander Ryan Martin.

  • The plan is to start with headstones belonging to veterans, some of which date back to the Civil War. The cost of the project may reach $100,000.

Wendy DiAlesandro brings us this story. Michael Indriolo took the pictures.

Esposito ignored mask rules and had words for a colleague at a recent meeting

Portage County Auditor Janet Esposito broke public health guidance when she failed to wear a mask at a close-quarters budget commission meeting on March 30. She also hassled Treasurer Brad Cromes for not attending in person.

  • The meeting was slightly derailed when Zoom connection issues caused frustration between Esposito and Cromes.

  • In comments to The Portager, they both said they'd do better.

News briefs

That's a lot of Easter baskets

Ravenna's Center of Hope got to work this Easter, distributing over 350 baskets to community centers and day cares around Portage County. The community showed unprecedented generosity with the number of baskets donated this year, the center said when they shared the photos with us.

More news:

  • A Ravenna man was found armed and barricaded in his apartment after a 911 call claiming intruders were on his roof, reports 19 News. It turned out to be a mental health crisis, according to their report.
Some good personal news: I'm scheduled for my vaccine this morning at the Brimfield Walmart! Have you all been able to schedule yours yet?

If you got an appointment and have tips for other Portager readers about how you did it, please share your story with me and I'll pass it along in the newsletter.

For my part, I logged in to the Walmart scheduling platform about 20 minutes after midnight on Tuesday and found most spots were available. But they do seem to go fast.

See you back here Wednesday!
