Kia ora neighbours and friends,

Guess who's returning to their roots!

In 2019 our pōhutukawa trees packed their bags and hitched a ride on a passing hiab to take an extended holiday from their Quay Street home of 40 years. Early next week they come home.

Our returning pōhutukawa family will begin to arrive from this Sunday night. All the larger trees will arrive first, and will be met by their smaller native tree cousins over the coming weeks. The first port of call for our trees will be Te Wānanga.

Due to their size and the careful attention required to introduce each one to their new residence, they need to arrive during the night under Quay Street road closures between Lower Hobson Street and Commerce Street.

Read on for more information about the road closures starting this Sunday night.

Back in 2019 Howell Davies, Auckland Council's Urban Forest Senior Advisor (aka the Tree Whisperer) took us through the steps involved in carefully relocating these beautiful old trees, you can watch it here.

Te Wānanga (Downtown Public Space)
Seemingly floating above the Downtown Ferry Basin, Te Wānanga, the new downtown public space is an impressive feat of engineering.  A design partnership with Mana Whenua elevated design thinking to deliver a project that expresses local identity, culture history and aspirations for the future.

Works continue around Te Wānanga's new deck to install the balustrades and leaners, and installation of the blue heritage fence is now underway.

Over the next weeks we will:

  • complete the sandblasting and sealing of the new deck.
  • complete installation of the heritage fence separating Te Wānanga from the northern footpath.
  • complete installation of the the balustrades and leaners.
  • commence installation of the custom designed street furniture, light poles, drinking fountain and new Kupenga nets.
Te Wānanga will open to the public in June.

Ferry Basin Redevelopment - Stage 1

The Ferry Basin Redevelopment project is an integral part of the $350 million Downtown Programme, and will see the creation of six new berths in the Ferry Basin.

It is another step towards modern, consolidated ferry infrastructure for Auckland. It will have improved accessibility and greater operational flexibility, which will help accommodate increased passenger numbers.

The new Ferry Basin infrastructure is expected to be open and operational for ferry passengers early July 2021.
