Greetings to you all - Nga mihi nui tatou

Well - it has arrived - the close of this term and the commencement directly of a really well deserved break for all. We know we are all continuing to deal with times of uncertainty - about what could be around the corner for us, how we will cope with it, and the impacts of any events. And we have managed our kura and community really well this term in my view - even including the Tsunami evacuation.  Thank you all for your support of our young people during these times. The golden goal is for us to continue to be focused on raising Resilience in and around us all. This is the trait that takes us through times of challenge.

We have been able to continue on with our learning programmes and to engage in all the busy sporting and unique experiences for our young people across our school and as I look toward term 2, with fewer "interruptions" to our learning programmes, we know that there is a really keen focus on learning.

In closing I trust you will all have a wonderful break - a chance to recharge your whanau batteries, connect with friends, enjoy the peace of the spaces around us, relax and enjoy your break

All the best
John

12 Outdoor Ed - Kayaking Trip 2
Last week 18 Yr 12 OED students went on a sea kayaking trip/assessment for 3-days with Emily Wilson and Sean Butler. The students were self-sufficient and camped on the islands in the Coromandel Harbour area. We had some pretty magical days where we saw a lot of eagle rays and even caught a few Kahawai off the kayaks. Students also had to complete deep water rescues as a part of their assessment.
K2 Challenge
Year 12 student Phoebe Asquith and her Dad Dan set a challenge to do the K2 over the weekend.  Not a ride for the faint hearted! Phoebe and Dan started in Coromandel and rode 80km’s finishing the Tairua side of the Kopu Hikuai’s.  This is an amazing achievement for these two and we are very proud of Phoebe.
Y1-2 Afternoon Disco
The Senior Tourism class along with the Y6 leaders treated the Y1-2's to a special disco event last Friday afternoon.  The children had so much fun and were very disappointed when it was time to go home.
Y3-6 80's Disco
The Year 3-6 disco on Friday night, 161 students attended and were offered a plethora of food, drinks, games and fun! The senior tourism class planned and ran the event - a hugely successful night. There were prizes for best dressed, statues, and a limbo competition.  There were some amazing costumes and loads of fun was had by all, including the senior students!

Great work by Jack Wheaton and Paige Hayward from Year 10 Performing Arts Technology, setting up and running the sound and lighting. Very impressive.

Well done to the senior tourism students for organising this event.
Primary Chess
“The pawns are the soul of chess.” - Francois A. D Philidor

Philidor was the first player to acknowledge the importance of pawns in a well-played chess game! And so have these four boys; Riley, Hadley, Antonin and William who have been coached by Nicky Fanning during the first term of school and ready for their first chess tournament!

Riley says "The chess board is like a battlefield"  followed by Antonin "The pawns are the soldiers"
"These children have learnt how to put their thinking caps on and make fantastic moves! Whilst learning it's ok to lose a game, what matters is how you treat your opponent with respect" says Nicky.

We will be working on different opening moves in Term 2 and look forward to seeing the chess club of MBAS grow.
Room 18 - Dance Show
This week we were invited to a dance show in the performing arts rooms by some of the senior students, they even taught us a few cool dance moves.
Room 21 - Digital Technologies
Room 21 have been learning about digital technologies...
  • Coding (giving instructions) - pretending to be robots. Loved hearing our start up and shut down noises!
  • Doing the “robot dance.
  • Making box robots.
M8 - Animation
M8 are planning, designing, constructing and creating stop-go animation movies. This makes for a very busy classroom.
Hei1 - Anzac Writing
For the past 3 weeks Hei 1 have been investigating our ANZAC Heroes and the roles animals and humans have played serving our country in World War 1 and World War 2. We have further developed our Tuakiri - Identity, through learning about members of our whanau who have served. We have honoured these family members through writing either a brief factual description or poetry.

We shall remember them.

Samples of our writing can be read here.
Y9 - Design Thinking with Applications
This year our Year 9's have all participated in a course called Design Thinking with Applications. There are four courses and students will complete one per term, rotating through all four courses. Design Thinking with Technologies, Design Thinking with Performing Arts, Design Thinking with Visual Arts and Design Thinking with Digital Communication.

Students use the Design Thinking process -  Here how students use the process:
L: Look, listen, and learn - In the first phase, students look, listen, and learn. The goal here is awareness. It might be a sense of wonder at a process or an awareness of a problem or a sense of empathy toward an audience.

A: Ask tons of questions - Sparked by curiosity, students move to the second phase, where they ask tons of questions.

U: Understanding the process, problem, opportunity - This leads to understanding the process or problem through an authentic research experience. They might conduct interviews or needs assessments, research articles, watch videos, or analyze data.

N: Navigate ideas - Students apply their newly acquired knowledge to potential solutions. In this phase, they navigate ideas. Here they not only brainstorm, but they also analyze ideas, combine ideas, and generate a concept for what they will create and pitch their idea.

C: Create a prototype - In this next phase, they create a prototype. It might be a digital work or a tangible product, a work of art or something they engineer. It might even be an action, a dance or an event or a system.

H: Highlight and fix - Next, they begin to highlight what’s working and fix what’s failing. The goal here is to view this revision process as an experiment full of iterations, where every mistake takes them closer to success.
LAUNCH to an Authentic Audience - Then, when it’s done, it’s ready to launch. In the launch phase, they send it to an authentic audience. They share their work with the world!

It was all go on the weekend for the boys competing in the North Island Schools MX Series in Rotorua. The competition was some of the best in New Zealand and the Mercury Bay MX boys rode hard and did us proud!

Results:

Friday - Secondary. Tane Skelton coming 6th overall 85cc 14/16yrs class; Jack Horne 7th overall 85cc 14/16yrs Novice class, and Logan Humphris 14th overall 85cc 14/16yrs Novice class.
