Seniors Festival off to a great start

People from our aged community have attended several events this week to celebrate the start of NSW Seniors Festival.

Literary events such as the ‘Writing your Memoirs Workshop’ and Author Talk with Susannah Fullerton proved popular, while the Quest for Life Foundation’s workshop helped participants eliminate stress and create strength and calm in their lives.

NSW Seniors Festival runs until 24 April and is presented in conjunction with our sponsors the Mittagong RSL, Macarthur Disability Services and the NSW Government.

Limited tickets are available for upcoming music, social and health and fitness activities.

Hospital parking to become a whole lot easier

On-street parking around Bowral Hospital is set to be improved following traffic changes surrounding the hospital.

From early May, Ascot Road between Sheffield Road and Mona Road will be converted to one-way traffic. At the same time, Mona Road between Ascot Road and Bowral Street will also be transferred to one-way movement.

These changes will ease parking pressure in and around the hospital and result in an increase of 29 additional on-street car spaces and five motorbike spaces.

While the changes will come into effect on 7 May, electronic variable message boards have been erected around the hospital alerting motorists of the pending changes.

Recycle your printer cartridges for free

Southern Highlands residents are already great recyclers, but we can do more to help keep the planet clean and green.

‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark’ is a free recycling program that collects used printer cartridges to be recycled for new uses.

Millions of printer cartridges reach the end of their life in Australia every year and if they’re sent to landfill, they can take between 450 to 1000 years to break down.

Even worse is that when these cartridges break apart in landfill, the toner or ink has the potential to contaminate groundwater and larger waterways.

By recycling them through ‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark’, the valuable resources they contain are kept out of landfill and can be put to new uses.

In the first quarter of 2021, over 222 kilograms of toner cartridges have been recycled through our Community Recycling Centre.

New Berrima to host emergency exercise

A major multi-agency emergency training exercise will be held at Boral's Berrima Cement Works on Monday 19 April.

The exercise will take place at the cement works and adjacent sports oval on Taylor Avenue in New Berrima between 8am and 2.30pm.

The mock emergency has been designed to test local emergency service response and procedures. These practice exercises help keep our community safe and ensure a ready and effective response to emergency situations.

There will be no public access to either site during the exercise and no disruption to local traffic. Residents and motorists should be aware but not alarmed by increased emergency response vehicles within the area.

We understand that emergency situations can stir up many different feelings such as stress and worry. Visit the Australian Red Cross website for information on taking care of yourself and others when there’s a real crisis.

Normal library hours resume

As COVID-19 restrictions ease across the state, normal operating hours are set to resume and more services are returning to our libraries from next week.

That means more time to study, relax or search for your next favourite read!

Bowral Central Library will remain open until 6.30pm weekdays and 4pm on Saturdays. Our Local Studies and Archive Collection will also reopen to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 2pm and 4pm.

Mittagong Branch Library will also stay open for an extra half hour on weekdays and continue to open on Saturday mornings.

Moss Vale Branch Library remains closed as the Civic Centre Refurbishment Project continues. We’re looking forward to welcoming you back to the new-look library in the coming months!

Don’t forget too that our Mobile Library service continues as per the pre-pandemic schedule including an additional stop in Moss Vale’s Leighton Gardens.
