➢ HAPPY HOUR

She Fed Her Husband an MRE to Teach Him about Growing Up in a Military Family

Tonight at 7pm on VBC Happy Hour, we welcome Kelly McHugh-Stewart, who recently wrote a wonderful article for the New York Times recently reprinted in Reader’s Digest, “I Fed My Husband a Combat Ration to Teach Him About My Military Childhood.” Kelly will talk with us about her love of MREs and her late father, Col. John M. McHugh, who was killed in action in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 2010. Join on Zoom →

➢ SCUTTLEBUTT

Growing Up a Military Brat

The term "military brat" is a badge of pride worn by generations of kids who traveled the world with their parents, moving into adulthood with the knowledge that they have the strength to handle anything. Military children deal with separations, deployments, frequent moves and even their parents' injuries as part of the life they were born into or entered with their families. Join us this week on The Scuttlebutt as we talk with two military brats (1 veteran and 1 non-veteran) about their early childhood and how they coped with life in the military. You can also read more about military families at USO.org and Army.mil. And a big thank you to D&D Metal Recycling and Auto Salvage for sponsoring The Scuttlebutt!

Why a Year of COVID-19 Social Distancing Has Been Especially Hard on Veterans

Point Park University student Amanda Andrews joined us several weeks ago to talk with our vets about the impact of COVID-19 on their mental health. Last week, she published an excellent article in the Point Park’s The Globe which features reflections from several of our veterans. Well done, Amanda! Read more here

➢ HEALTH

New Army Field Manual Proposes Novel Solution to the Problem of Sleep Deprivation:
Take a Nap

Last fall, the Army recommended soldiers take afternoon naps in they feel sleep deprived. FM 7-22, the latest revision of the Army Field Manual that came out in October, states, “the afternoon dip provides an opportunity for obtaining good quality daytime sleep to help pay down any existing sleep debt. Soldiers can generally take these naps without significantly disrupting the circadian rhythm of alertness.” Soldiers and Marines are famous for sleeping anywhere, anytime, like Bill Mauldin’s Joe here, or like in these examples of extreme napping.

➢ ANNIVERSARIES

Happy Cosmonautics Day! And Two Other April 12 Anniversaries

On this day in 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin completed one orbit around the earth, making him the first human in outer space. One hundred years earlier, Confederate batteries fired on Union-held Fort Sumpter in Charleston Harbor, triggering the Civil War. But there’s one other April 12 event that was the WWII generation’s near equivalent of the JFK assassination: the Death of FDR. Watch Todd’s short video about it here.
