What is the Recfishing forum?
The Forum on Recreational Fisheries and Aquatic Environment has been established to help the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) understand what can be complex issues affecting 25 million EU angling constituents. The European Parliament deals with important legislation which has a direct impact on fish stocks and the aquatic environment.

Objective 30%: why involving recreational anglers is key for the success of Marine Protected Areas

Webinar | 20 April, 14.00 – 15.30

The event will be co-chaired by MEP Isabel Carvalhais and MEP Søren Gade.

The European Commission’s Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 sets two ambitious objectives: legally protecting a minimum of 30% of the EU’s sea area and integrating ecological corridors; and strictly protecting at least a third of the EU’s protected areas.

Recreational anglers and the recreational fisheries sector are taking a keen interest in the topic, as some of the users and potential beneficiaries of a successful management of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Europe. Indeed, thriving angling opportunities rely on healthy fish stocks. The sector can play a key role in the design, management and enforcement of MPAs across Europe.

However, existing MPAs often lack the proper management and the continuous control and enforcement of conservation rules that are key for their success, meaning that some MPAs are protected on paper only. Those challenges will need to be addressed in order to protect effectively and efficiently the 30% of the sea needed to reach the objectives set by the Commission.

This webinar will address the state of play of current MPAs, how to protect them, and the role of recreational fishermen to contribute to the success of MPAs.

Restoring fish migration routes along the Danube river:

a concrete case for the Biodiversity Strategy

How should the Danube river system contribute to the fish migration restoration ambitions?

MEP Michal Wiezik asked a written question to the European Commission on the Danube river system’s contribution to the EU Biodiversity Strategy’s restoration targets, which foresees an objective of restoring 25,000 km into free-flowing rivers. Fish migration in the Danube is hindered by barriers notably at the Iron Gate on the Serbian/Romanian border and at Gabčíkovo in Slovakia. The Commission responded to the MEP’s question by giving some details regarding the longest European river, recognising that fish migration was made more difficult because of those obstacles on Europe’s rivers.

Last October, the European Parliament Forum on Recreational Fisheries and the Aquatic Environment organised a webinar on the impact of hydropower on fish migration and the EU’s new commitments under the Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. The case of the Iron Gate was also discussed on that occasion.

‘Take 5’: a campaign to tackle litter and plastic pollution

The Take 5’ campaign aims to tackle the issue of litter and plastic pollution in freshwater and marine environments, which causes irreversible damages to wildlife. Its principle is quite practical and straightforward: asking every angler either to take 5 items of litter on his or her way home, or to take 5 minutes to remove any litter after fishing. In doing so, anglers are confident that it can make a huge difference in reducing the problem of throwaway plastic.

This campaign, launched in the UK by the Angling Trust, might and should inspire other suchlike initiatives to blossom in Europe, in order to turn the tide on the increasing amount of litter found on European riverbanks and beaches.

Introducing… the Austrian Board of Trustees for Fisheries and Water Protection

This article is part of a series dedicated to the presentation of angling associations across Europe. For this edition, we introduce the EAA member from Austria:
ÖKF FishLife  - Österreichisches Kuratorium für Fischerei und Gewässerschutz.

With thunderous mountain streams, crystal clear lakes, and pools where trout, char and greyling are at home, angling in Austria is an insiders’ tip known to enthusiasts all over Europe. No wonder why the number of anglers in the country is estimated at 410,000. This activity generates an annual direct and indirect contribution to the economy of €437.2 million according to figures from the Austrian angling association.
