Since the Institute constructed its own electrical grid and steam system in 1952 and converted the Holland Plant from coal to natural gas, effectively reducing emissions produced on campus, commitment to sustainability has been a driving force within the Tech community. This April, help continue this long-standing tradition and join the Tech community in its annual celebration of Earth Day and campus sustainability efforts. This year’s theme for Tech’s annual Earth Day celebration is Amplify Impact, referencing the Institute’s Strategic Plan, and calling everyone to positively contribute to our community and to making the Earth a better place.

Sustainability and Research

As a research institution, sustainability is at the forefront of our researchers’ minds and remains a driving goal of many labs across campus. Catch up with the most recent advances made by members of the GT community, such as producing cleaner and more sustainable fertilizer, and hear faculty  members’ thoughts on how sustainability goals impact the field of engineering.

Rachael Smith’s Imperfect Sustainability

“One of my goals in the last year has been to become ‘imperfectly sustainable.’ I’ve taken small steps such as switching to cloth napkins, buying reusable produce bags, using bar soap and shampoo, and even starting our own compost. The major transformation has happened in my backyard though! We installed a raised garden bed last spring and just recently started our second growing season by planting lettuce, kale, cucumbers, and two kinds of peppers in the bed. Additionally, we have tomatoes, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, and various herbs growing in pots. I'm excited about this small measure of food security and look forward to sharing our bounty with friends and neighbors!"

— Rachael Smith, Corporate Relations Manager for the Master of Science in Analytics Program (ISyE)

Melissa Hubbs’ Personal Farm and Goat Milk Soap

“I absolutely love gardening, and farming for many reasons! I love the work, and the benefits. Knowing that I am getting great quality organic produce, and I get to make great Goat Milk Soap and Lotions from my own goats that provide the natural fertilizer for my garden. People often ask why I make the commute to GT, I simply respond, ‘I love where I work, and I love where I live!’
